Fixed Term for 3 years, Job Family: Staff Scientist, Grade 1

We are seeking to appoint a statistical epidemiologist to conduct real-world statistical analyses in the busy Global Health and Populations Research Group, co-located between the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute and the University of Cambridge, led by Dr. Manjinder Sandhu. Our group assesses the burden and aetiology of chronic diseases among populations, integrating principles and procedures underlying epidemiology, genomics and public health, to develop and apply real-world evidence (RWE) with a strong focus on global health.

The successful applicant will work on analysing real-world data (RWD) using electronic health records (EHRs). This will include planning and undertaking complex statistical analyses of longitudinal data with repeated measures to assess epidemiological associations between multiple exposures and disease outcomes. They will also provide statistical input into protocols, study reports and papers for publication.

We are looking for someone who has substantial experience in data harmonisation and statistical analysis of large-scale RWD from electronic health record databases in the UK, informed by an understanding of the structure and format of these databases. They should be able to work independently to plan and deliver statistical analyses, as well as devise the statistical methodology for observational research projects. Furthermore, they should be able to evaluate existing statistical methods in different data contexts.

As a senior postholder in the research group, the successful applicant will also contribute statistical support to other global health research projects within the group as required; help to develop scientific goals for related projects and coordinate activities and interact with other members of the group so that goals are met; contribute to publications or disseminate research findings; and contribute to the process of securing funds.

This post provides a unique opportunity to lead large-scale epidemiological studies involving statistical analyses of millions of individuals, in the context of population health and genomics globally.

Essential Skills

* A degree in medical statistics, epidemiology or a related discipline, with sufficient breadth/depth of specialist knowledge in statistics and clinical epidemiology

* Substantial experience of conducting statistical analyses with large EHR datasets in the UK e.g. from CPRD, THIN, ResearchOne, QResearch

* Substantial experience of conducting statistical analyses with large-scale longitudinal epidemiological data

* Substantial experience in data manipulation, curation and merging

* Experience of providing statistical input into study protocols including statistical methodology, analysis plans, study design and sample size/power calculations

* Ability to report and interpret findings from statistical analyses to a range of audiences

* Substantial experience conducting epidemiological analyses in R software

Other information

The Sanger Institute is a charitably funded research centre focused on understanding the role of genetics in health and disease. We use state of the art large-scale genomic approaches to drive world-leading projects to uncover the basis of genetic and infectious disease. Our goal is to provide results that can be translated into diagnostics, treatments or therapies that reduce global health burdens.

To help researchers to develop their skills and networks, the Institute hosts a range of scientific seminars with internal and invited speakers, scientific group meetings and skills development workshops.

Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute welcomes applications from all candidates irrespective of age, disability, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, race, religion or belief, or marital or civil partnership status.
