We have an excellent opportunity for those interested in starting a career in IT!

We have an apprenticeship opportunity available in our Web Systems Administration Team based at our Head Office in the centre of Manchester - the hub of the digital craze. We don’t expect you to be an IT expert yet, but a fundamental understanding of how things work is really important, as well as an inquisitive attitude and clear motivation to build on your technical knowledge and develop your skills.

You’ll receive training for UNIX administration as well as a great deal of support and training internally within the existing team. At N Brown Group we offer regular opportunities to develop your professional and team working skills whilst gaining commercial understanding of the wider business.

Within your role you will also complete the Level 4 Software Developer Apprenticeship programme. Our apprenticeships combine online learning, classroom training and on-the-job experience to develop your IT knowledge and technical skills.

What will you be building?

Our teams use a variety of tech including UNIX, Oracle DB, scripting languages e.g. Perl, Apache/Tomcat, Hybris, WebSphere, DB2, IBM z/OS.

The team support, maintain and deploy Java code builds for our 20 fashion and homeware high traffic websites. We also assist in key business projects, innovation of digital solutions and development of the new US contact centre application. The team also support the internal web systems used to load new content onto the websites along with aiding other areas of the business so your work will not only impact and improve the experience of our customers, but our colleagues too.

You’ll work within a digital centre of excellence, sharing ideas with teams of Web administration specialists, Java developers and Testers. Our in-house Development team is small but growing fast, so you’ll be contributing to a variety of projects and your ideas will be genuinely valued.

Key responsibilities:

Supporting our customer-facing websites ensuring that they are running efficiently and constantly seeking to improve performance wherever possible.

Assisting in deploying new code releases into the test and production environments.

You’ll shadow experienced colleagues which will enable you to contribute in development and maintenance of our wide mix of web servers.

Working closely with the Java developers, analysts, other support teams and business users to support in dealing with production issues and project work.

You’ll need to have:

As a minimum we ask that you have personal or educational project experience of operating systems and a basic understanding of at least one of the following: UNIX, Perl, Apache/Tomcat, Hybris, WebSphere or DB2. Any experience gained from personal software related development projects would be advantageous

You’ll need at least five GCSEs (or equivalent) of grades A*-C (or new grading of 4-9) including Maths, English and IT. You will also need to possess a minimum of three A-Levels (or equivalent) at grade C or above that include a minimum of one IT related subject, preferably Computer Science

We are looking for candidates with a real enthusiasm for computer-based problem solving as well as the desire to improve the user experiences of our customers and colleagues. You should be curious to learn and can demonstrate that you can learn independently. You should also be able to pick up new systems and technology quickly, have the confidence to ask questions and the capacity to learn from your colleagues.

The apprenticeship starts in September 2018 so you’ll need to have finished full-time education by this date.

A career at N Brown means you’ll receive great training, the very best of IT career development and opportunities within N Brown whilst also receiving a competitive salary and benefits package.

Employees in our business may have access to our customers’ personal data therefore for a number of our roles, offers of employment are subject to a satisfactory criminal record check. Having a criminal record will not necessarily prevent an individual from obtaining a position with N Brown Group.
