Coxswain / Mechanic - Barra

Barra Island

c£30,368 per annum Plus Benefits

Our client is the charity that saves lives at sea. They now have an opportunity at Barra Island Lifeboat Station for someone whose resilience and leadership skills are just as strong as an ability to handle a boat in adverse sea conditions.

The majority of your time will be divided between ensuring the Severn Class lifeboat and her equipment work to the highest order and training and assessing volunteer crewmembers to our client’s competence standards. Inspiring their motivation and progress, you’ll take them on seagoing exercises, identifying ways they can improve and imparting your valuable knowledge - so that when an emergency shout does occur, you, your crew and your lifeboat will be absolutely prepared. And because there’s always a high degree of interest from the public, you’ll have frequent opportunities to meet them and talk about your station’s work.

You will be required to live in a small island community in close proximity to the lifeboat station. You will be on call, when not on leave, to enable a rapid response when a shout occurs.

To be considered, you will need:

- Extensive maritime experience and the ability to command/lead a crew and safely operate/handle vessels up to 20 metres in length

- Experience of maintaining and operating high speed marine diesel engines and their ancillary systems

- Knowledge of SAR operations

- To have a RYA Yachtmaster Offshore (Power) certification or equivalent

- To have completed a marine/mechanical engineering apprenticeship or equivalent to NVQ Level 3 standard

- A high level of IT literacy

As this is a sea-going appointment, you will also need to satisfy the institution's medical and eyesight standards.

As a Coxswain / Mechanic, you will have excellent communication and interpersonal skills to build effective relationships with volunteers at the lifeboat station, the local community, regional technical support and national fundraising office.

Ideally, you will have the RNLI COBT for ALB Coxswain and Command of the lifeboat operational pass out and/or the RNLI COBT for ALB mechanic and Command of machinery operational pass out.

This is a full time role, working 37.5 hours per week. However, this role is also available as a part time job share.

The closing date for applications is the 31st January 2018.

Our client’s staff and volunteers have been saving lives at sea without prejudice for nearly 200 years. They respect and value diversity of background, skills and perspectives within their teams, and consider it essential to help the organisation deliver a world-class lifesaving service. Our client is an inclusive organisation and welcome applications from everyone. In addition to having the skills needed for the role, our client also looks for applicants who share their commitment to living their values (trustworthy, courageous, selfless, and dependable), and helping them work towards their goals of halving drowning in the UK and Ireland by 2024. This involves a growing commitment to preventative action, using expertise to work in partnership with communities locally, nationally and internationally to prevent drowning.
