The British Antarctic Survey (BAS), part of the Natural Environment Research Council, aims to undertake a world-class programme of scientific research, and to sustain for the UK an active and influential regional presence and a leadership role in Antarctic affairs.

We are looking to appoint a Web Developer (Geospatial) within the BAS Mapping and Geographic Information Centre (MAGIC).

What we want is someone enthusiastic and conscientious with solid web development skills to help us with current satellite information services plus new ideas and ongoing projects funded by the European Space Agency. Beyond web development skills, active interest in cloud computing, geospatial technologies and data visualisation will be highly relevant.

Purpose

To develop and implement web applications for polar satellite information services.

Qualification

A degree or higher qualification in a numerate subject area, or relevant work experience (or equivalent).

Duties

Develop, improve and maintain web applications and services primarily based on satellite data.

Contribute to development of new polar geospatial information services and exploitation platforms.

Explore new methods for geospatial data visualisation.

To undertake other duties as requested by the Director of BAS.

Communication skills

Fluent in spoken and written English language. - Essential

Computer / IT skills

Experience in backend development with detailed knowledge of at least one programming language such as Ruby, Java, Python, Javascript, PHP, Scala or Go. - Essential

Experience in front end development with detailed knowledge of HTML, CSS and JavaScript. - Essential

Experience of using REST APIs. - Essential

Familiarity with common web security threats. - Desirable [3]

Familiarity with accessibility issues. - Desirable [3]

Specific experience designing and building scientific data applications. - Desirable [3]

Interpersonal skills

Experience working successfully within a small team. - Essential

Qualifications
