The British Antarctic Survey (BAS), part of the Natural Environment Research Council, aims to undertake a world-class programme of scientific research, and to sustain for the UK an active and influential regional presence and a leadership role in Antarctic affairs.

BAS are now seeking an experienced Project Manager to join their Programme Management Office. This role will focus on the initial start-up and implementation of this project to deliver the Antarctic Air capability for the future. This will include engaging with internal and external stakeholders, capturing end user requirements, reviewing the current fleet capability and identifying any investment requirements to maintain at the forefront of Polar Air operations.

If capital investment in our air platforms is identified the project manager will assist in the preparation of a business case, including the commercial strategy and market engagement. The project manager with support from our major procurement specialists will manage the tender process and evaluation of tender packages and funding dependent, manage the contract and in service of potential new platforms.

Purpose

The British Antarctic Survey (BAS) is embarking on the modernisation of its Polar Operations. In April 2014, funding of £225M was earmarked by the UK government for a New Polar Research Vessel together with associated enabling works at the UK’s Antarctic Research stations. The introduction of the new vessel and modernisation of our Antarctic Stations and logistics operations will impact on our current air capability. BAS are now seeking an experienced Project Manager to join their Programme Management Office. This role will focus on the initial start-up and implementation of this project to deliver the Antarctic Air capability for the future. This will include engaging with internal and external stakeholders, capturing end user requirements, reviewing the current fleet capability and ascertaining whether there is a delivery gap.

Degree level or equivalent experience

Duties

As a member of the Programme Management Office the project manager may be require to perform a wide range of duties on various projects, including some or all of the following:

Plan & Resource the Project

- Scope, prioritise and deliver project work packages by working closely with stakeholders & senior management

- Define and control the project plan that identifies and sequences the activities needed to complete the project successfully

- Determine the required resource required to complete the project and manage the budgets and provide regular reports to the Project Board

- Determine the objectives and critical success factors for project evaluation.

- Identify resources and assign responsibilities

Implement & Control the project

- Provide status reports for senior management

- Tender for and manage contract packages with various suppliers

- Define, and control the project risks and issues log

- Configuration, and management of documents and deliverables

- Take responsibility for all health and safety issues on the project, co-ordinating risk assessments and other documentation.

- Line manage other project staff if required

-Manage and approval all budgeted project expenditures.

- Establish a communication schedule to update stakeholder and appropriate staff on the progress of the project.
