At Public Health England our mission is to protect and improve the nation's health and wellbeing, and reduce health inequalities. We are looking for committed, skilled and enthusiastic colleagues to join our ICT team.

We now have an exciting opportunity for an experienced Systems Architect to take ownership of its technical architecture and implement enterprise architecture standards and protocols. As the jobholder you will play a key part in defining and executing PHE’s technical strategy and setting the standards and policies for technical development and deployment. You will also lead and contribute to the strategic design of PHE’s information systems and work closely with business areas to understand their future needs, and to ensure that any future technical model meets these needs.

We are looking for: You will be a technically qualified and experienced Systems Architect, who can demonstrate previous success in defining the architecture, standards and controls for a large organisation. You will be an excellent leader, able to inspire those around you and build confidence in your abilities and those of your team. You will have an authoritative grasp of technical detail, but be able to translate this for non-technical colleagues and present ideas in an accessible manner. Your communication and stakeholder management skills will be second to none and you will be able to demonstrate previous experience of thought leadership and influence at a senior level. You are able to organise your time well and be able to respond to occasionally challenging deadlines, whilst being able to accommodate changing priorities. You are confident and credible, able to influence and build consensus at the highest levels of the organisation.

This is an important position with responsibilities including:

Defining and implementing technical strategy for web hosting platforms;

Optimising the technical architecture for line of business workloads;

Designing and implementing resilience and high-availability mechanisms for business critical applications;

Setting system performance standards and baselines;

Working with system owners to translate their requirements into effective technical solutions;

Applying common configuration and design principles across multiple systems;

Developing enterprise and technical architecture standards for adoption across PHE.

You will be a creative, resourceful and experienced IT expert. In addition, you will have great interpersonal skills and a real commitment to giving our customers the best service possible.

Does this sound like you? If so, we will encourage and support your professional development and help you grow as part of a special organisation that makes a real difference.

As the remit of the organisation is to protect the health of the public, which is a 24x7 requirement, you may also be required to participate in an out-of-hours support rota which provides support cover for ICT emergencies, ensuring, in particular, that the services for which you are responsible meet the service delivery criteria. Much of this work is undertaken remotely, so can fit in with family responsibilities.

PHE is bringing together its national scientific laboratories and headquarters to create one of the world’s leading centres for public health science in Harlow, Essex, in the heart of the London and Cambridge life sciences corridor. This post will move to PHE Harlow between 2021 and 2024 as part of this major development. For more information please search ‘PHE Harlow collection’.
