Lead data engineer/Contract/12 months/Glasgow/Edinburgh/GIS/Python

Spring Technology is currently recruiting for a Lead Data Engineer to work with our client in Edinburgh and/or Glasgow; you will be required to visit both sites. This is a contract role for the duration of 12 months; the successful candidate is due to start as soon as possible, notice periods will be taken into consideration.

The Role

This role will support the management and improvement of spatial and traditional datasets across the business, with a focus on the data challenges raised within the business transformation program.

The successful candidate will provide hands-on technical leadership to agile development teams, while ensuring alignment with broader strategic architectural direction.

The main tasks will include:

*Design and Develop big data platform and supporting architecture in performance, scalability & security

*Responsible for the release of software and data products into the production environment

*Responsible for defining a solution that is secure, appropriate in scale and size

*Perform all phases of software engineering including requirements analysis, application design, code development and testing

*Design and implement product features in collaboration with business and IT stakeholders

*Design reusable components, frameworks and libraries

*Work very closely with architecture groups and drive solutions

*Participate in an Agile / Scrum methodology to deliver high

*Design and develop innovative solutions to meet the needs of the business

*Undertaking bespoke analysis of spatial information in support of registration, research and advisory activities within the business

*Review code and provide feedback relative to best practices and improving performance

*Troubleshoot production support issues post - deployment and come up with solutions as required

Essential skills include:

*Postgraduate or equivalent qualification in Geographical Information Systems and/or previous experience in a similar role.

*Experience of using a variety of geographic information analysis techniques

*Experience and awareness of leading GIS products and technologies (e.g. QGIS, FME, PostGIS)

*Experience of PostgreSQL

*Experience developing in Python

*Experience with Unix/Linux

*Experience of designing and delivering micro service architectures.

*Experience in maintaining Geospatial data repositories (e.g. spatial databases and data warehouses, spatial indexing etc.).

*Experience in developing and maintaining ETL processes (data improvement, data transformation)

*Ability to understand and translate stakeholder needs (Ability to map business problems to data-centric solutions)

*The ability to develop and maintain effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders.

Desirable experience

*Experience developing in C++

*Experience with Ansible, Jenkins, PL/pgSQL, DbFit, Bash

*Experience with Docker.

*An understanding of licences and how they impact on product delivery

*Experience in using open technologies and open data

*Experience of test driven development

*Experience developing and communicating strategic initiatives.

*Experience in the delivery of quality assurance and improvement activities for geospatial data

*Experience in delivering and maintaining open-standards compliant geospatial services (e.g. OGC, INSPIRE)

*Experience of GIS scripting using Python

*Awareness of international standards affecting spatial data
