As Digital Design Team Lead, you will lead a team of UX/UI designers, Service Designers, User Researchers, and Content Designers in the production, management, and continual improvement of Ofgem's digital products and projects for Delivery & Schemes.  You will need to be able to coach, guide and organise this team to deliver high quality design work for our Schemes and provide advice and guidance to Ofgem on design principles and support their Digital Strategy.

You will always be thinking about the end user, you will ensure that Ofgem's products are highly accessible, responding to the users' needs, as well as being GDS compliant. You will possess a strong mastery of design fundamentals, with the ability to produce creative work that meets and excites the Ofgem's Scheme users.

You'll be passionate about utilising evidence, data, and research to make effective, user-focused decisions. Just as importantly you'll have excellent communication and influencing skills and be able to confidently collaborate with stakeholders to research and develop cohesive design plans, concepts, and prototypes, and be able to translate complex issues into clear solutions.

You'll have an in-depth knowledge of Agile delivery methodology, and experience of working in an Agile team. Your experience of working within a technical environment will enable you to use data to challenge and create a prototype using digital tools for the best design from a service and user perspective.

You will already have Design Team Lead experience and be able to, at pace, direct and manage a team to deliver successful design outcomes for Ofgem's users.  You will also be flexible and when necessary, could take a hands-on approach.  You will be able to demonstrate experience of developing and coaching a design team to reach high standards for design and positive outcomes for users.

Job description

As Digital Design Team Lead you will lead a team of UX/UI designers, Service Designers, User Researchers and Content Designers in the production, management and continual improvement of our digital products and projects for Delivery & Schemes. The successful candidate will manage the team to work with external suppliers, the Delivery & Schemes Project Teams, Operations & Policy teams and colleagues across the organisation to deliver iterative design improvements to our digital projects.  The Design Team Lead must ensure that our products are highly accessible, that we understand the user needs thoroughly, (taking a user centric approach) as well as being GDS compliant. 

You will be:  

An experienced designer, responsible for the delivery of high-quality digital products.

An expert digital practitioner, experienced and working on a high-profile project making sure the products delivered are user centred, GDS compliant and meet all accessibility requirements stipulated by Government's set standards.

Passionate about using evidence, data and research to make user-focused decisions.

A problem solver, analysing and helping to identify the appropriate solution.

Focused on outcomes rather than solutions, ensuring that new services and features deliver on project goals, strategic objectives and user needs.

A servant leader who will support team members to develop as individuals and collectively to deliver products for Ofgem.

You will need to deliver your expertise with genuine enthusiasm that enables colleagues to better understand the diverse needs of our users and improve the user experience on our systems.

Key Responsibilities

You must manage all aspects of the design process, from research and ideation to creative conceptualisation and design. You must collaborate with stakeholders to research and develop cohesive design plans, concepts and prototypes.

The person is a team leader who initiates research activities and provides on-the-job training to enhance the core competence of team members. You will work with a diverse group of internal and external stakeholders to ensure final design output meets the needs of the organisation or its customers.

You should possess the ability to lead project teams towards successful adoption of new design ideas. You will possess a strong mastery of design fundamentals and be able to generate creative work that meets the requirements of stakeholders.

You should able to work on multiple projects concurrently and deliver on expectations within tight deadlines.

You will be accountable for researching, designing, and prototyping new user experiences based on product requirements. Deliverables include design mock-up's, prototyping, production of visual assets, and documentation required for proper implementation.

You will work closely with cross-functional teams such as Solution Architects, Product Managers, Business Analysts, Delivery Managers, Developers, Testers, Quality Assurance and Senior Management.

Prior experience working within a technical environment is a key requirement. You should possess extraordinary visual and user interface design skills, as well as user-centred design principles. In depth knowledge of the GDS design framework is essential and you will  have an affinity for consistency, colour use, typography, and a keen eye for subtle details.
