The Opportunity

Make an impact on the way the UK Parliament works. Use your software engineering skills to help modernise Parliament and bring it to more people through the power of digital. This is work of national importance, helping UK democracy function better, more efficiently and more transparently.

Creating bespoke systems for Parliament, you can expect huge variety and continuous change. Reporting to a Senior Developer and working as part of a multi-disciplinary squad, you will collaborate with colleagues across disciplines including test, DevOps, delivery, design, user research and performance analysis to address diverse and complex issues, many unique to Parliament. You will:

build a strong sense of the requirements of both internal and external customers

write high-quality code

develop new software

evolve existing applications

ensure standards and policies are followed in your work

What You Need

You'll have a strong grasp of best-practice coding standards and the ambition to expand your expertise and experience. Creative and self-motivated, you'll be confident working with bespoke applications and collaborating with other people, including users. An ability to see problems and turn them into improvement plans is key. You will bring:

demonstrable experience across C#, .NET, .NET Core and .NET Framework, web frameworks including MVC and Web API, SQL / SQL Server with experience in constructing databases, creating RESTful APIs, Git, code abstraction, debugging and systems analysis, HTML5, CSS / SASS & JavaScript and TypeScript

familiarity with a front-end framework such as Angular / React / Vue

the ability to review specifications and use these to code, test and document programs or scripts, using appropriate standards and tools

the skills to translate logical designs into physical designs, and document all work

the ability to build and test simple interfaces between systems, and work on more complex integration as part of a wider team

excellent written and spoken communication skills including the capacity to network and build relationships

the ability to pass security clearance, backed by the right to work in the UK

About The Team

The Software Engineering function sits within the Product Directorate of the Parliamentary Digital Service (PDS). The Product directorate in PDS is working to digitise our democracy by creating, supporting and improving our products and services with the aim of making things easier and better for users. Our work spans a range of back and front-end products and services aimed at meeting the rising customer needs of Members and their staff for better digital services.
