Help deliver creative software solutions essential to the success of our mission  Here at GCHQ, we have a clear purpose - we unlock the complex world of data and communications to protect the UK from threats such as cyber-attacks, terrorism, and espionage. Working together towards that goal, we support each other every step of the way in an environment that encourages teamwork and innovation. We're proud to collaborate - and even prouder to work with purpose. As a Lead Software Engineer, you won't just lead an Agile team - you'll help shape our ways of working. And you'll have autonomy to decide how best to meet the needs of our mission to keep the UK safe. What will this look like day-to-day? Well, you'll contribute to large-scale projects. You'll use your fluency in a range of software engineering methods, languages, and frameworks such as C++, GoLang, Java, JavaScript, .NET, Node, Python and Rust or Cloud (AWS, Azure, GCP) to influence tech adoption and direction. Plus, you'll use your understanding of the full lifecycle of software-based systems, maintaining awareness of the wider picture. You'll also lead planning sessions that'll shape our working processes and oversee mentoring and pair programming with junior colleagues. And, as well as continually seeking to learn and develop new skills, you'll ensure others are furthering their potential too. You'll have the autonomy to undertake your role, while being supported by those around you. To be successful in this role, you'll have considerable knowledge of solving technical problems and the experience required to oversee the design and development of uniquely challenging software projects. These could be complex in their depth (algorithmic uniqueness, multi-threading, and API protection) or in their wider interactions (services, integrations and systems thinking). So, you'll consider their non-functional requirements, ensuring effectiveness across scale, resilience, and security. And with sound communication and negotiation skills, you'll be confident leading and advising Senior Software Engineers as well as technical and non-technical customers. Protecting a diverse nation takes diverse people. So, if you're excited about working with us and think you can do much of what we're looking for but aren't sure if you are 100% there yet, we'd still love to hear from you. What will we give you in return? Well, as well as an inclusive, supportive environment that encourages development, you'll receive some amazing benefits. Everything from 25 days' annual leave (plus 10.5 days of public and privilege holidays) and an excellent pension scheme to an interest-free season ticket loan and on-site facilities including a subsided gym (at some locations). Hybrid working options are available, depending on the business area and needs. You'll also be empowered to drive and shape your own personal development. So, you'll have access to learning opportunities tailored to your role. And further training will be encouraged, no matter where you are in your career with a minimum of 10% of your work time being dedicated to this. Finally, there's the fact that you'll enjoy plenty of purposeful challenges and unique projects you just won't find anywhere else. At GCHQ diversity and inclusion are critical to our mission. To protect the UK, we need a truly diverse workforce that reflects the society we serve. This includes diversity in every sense of the word: those with different backgrounds, ages, ethnicities, gender identities, sexual orientations, ways of thinking and those with disabilities or neurodivergent conditions. We therefore welcome and encourage applications from everyone, including those from groups that are under-represented in our workforce such as women, those from an ethnic minority background, people with disabilities and those from low socio-economic backgrounds.
