Use your problem-solving skills to delivery software solutions that safeguard the nation

Here at GCHQ, we have a clear purpose - we unlock the complex world of data and communications to protect the UK from threats such as cyber-attacks, terrorism, and espionage. Working together towards that goal, we support each other every step of the way in an environment that encourages teamwork and innovation. We're proud to collaborate - and even prouder to work with purpose.

As a Senior Software Engineer, you'll work with and sometimes lead an Agile team, building creative solutions to keep the UK safe. You'll use your extensive knowledge of a range of software engineering methods, languages, and frameworks, like JavaScript, Java, C++, Node, Python, Rust, Go and .NET to establish best practice. This knowledge will also help you contribute to the architecture and design of new and existing systems and deliver positive outcomes for the business. You'll also seek out opportunities to develop not just your own abilities, but those of others - whether that's liaising with technical and non-technical customers or mentoring junior team members. Plus, you'll keep up with new and emerging technologies, and look to lead in their adoption to solve mission problems.

We're looking for a someone who's resilient and self-motivated. Someone who can work independently with minimal guidance, and who's able to critically assess their own outputs, as well as the work of others inside and outside the team. And you'll have experience with hands-on coding and previously taking ownership of a project or piece of work. This may include one of these roles: Multi-skilled Software Engineering, Cloud Engineering, UX, Site Reliability Engineering, Front-End design, Agile, Solution Architecture, Data Engineering, and Machine Learning Operations. Above all, you'll be a collaborator with a knack for influencing and leading Agile teams, and passionate about mentoring and developing the engineering skills of others.

Protecting a diverse nation takes diverse people. So, if you're excited about working with us and think you can do much of what we're looking for but aren't sure if you are 100% there yet, we'd still love to hear from you.

What will we give you in return? Well, as well as an inclusive, supportive environment that encourages innovation, you'll receive some amazing benefits. Everything from 25 days' annual leave (plus 10.5 days of public and privilege holidays) and an excellent pension scheme to an interest-free season ticket loan and on-site facilities including a subsided gym (at some locations).

Hybrid working options are available, depending on the business area and needs. You'll also be empowered to drive and shape your own personal development. So, you'll have access to learning opportunities tailored to your role. And further training will be encouraged, no matter where you are in your career with a minimum of 10% of your work time being dedicated to this. Finally, there's the fact that you'll enjoy plenty of purposeful challenges and unique projects you just won't find anywhere else.

At GCHQ diversity and inclusion are critical to our mission. To protect the UK, we need a truly diverse workforce that reflects the society we serve. This includes diversity in every sense of the word: those with different backgrounds, ages, ethnicities, gender identities, sexual orientations, ways of thinking and those with disabilities or neurodivergent conditions. We therefore welcome and encourage applications from everyone, including those from groups that are under-represented in our workforce such as women, those from an ethnic minority background, people with disabilities and those from low socio-economic backgrounds.
