The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office are seeking a Deputy Director Enterprise Data on a permanent basis.

The FCDO's enduring purpose as a department is "to lead the Government's diplomatic, development and consular work around the world". We employ more than 17,000 staff in 168 countries, across our diplomatic and development offices worldwide, including in 280 overseas Embassies and High Commissions.  Our UK-based staff work in our headquarters: King Charles Street, London and Abercrombie House, East Kilbride, and we also have staff based in Milton Keynes.

This role reports to the Chief Digital and Information Officer (CDIO) and will be a member of the Information and Digital Directorate (IDD) senior leadership team, supporting the CDIO with the collective leadership and transformation of the Directorate.

In an organisation that has a clear vision to "put data, evidence and analysis at the heart of all our work", you will be responsible for the enterprise data services which enable FCDO staff to find, trust and use data to underpin more effective decision making.

Your role will be complementary to the Head of the Centre for Data and Analysis (CfDA) who is responsible for central data analytical services, organisational culture and capability.  You will co-lead with them on data strategy and governance.

As Deputy Director Enterprise Data you will be responsible for:

Defining, maintaining, and driving the adoption of human and machine-ready enterprise data and information architectures, data standards and tools across FCDO.

Developing and executing the FCDO's Data Strategy to support FCDO's current and future objectives, directly supporting the provision and use of trusted data.

Growing FCDO's technical data skills, including in infrastructure, architecture, data science, creating a community of experienced and passionate experts.

Developing and iterating a robust data governance approach that balances the "need to know" with the "need to share" and providing high quality data to the analytical community.

Managing a team of data specialists responsible for data governance and architecture, and leading the community of data engineers and data scientists operating across distributed digital teams.

Building trust at the highest levels (C-Suite equivalent) in FCDO's data and the potential of data, not only to enable but to transform FCDO's ability to deliver impactful outcomes globally.

You will be part of the Directorate's senior leadership team reporting directly to FCDO's Chief Digital Information Officer (CDIO) and working with key stakeholders and partners across HMG including the Central Digital and Data Office (CDDO).

Data expertise. You understand the importance of digital and data in meeting strategic outcomes, and you have experience of providing data centric solutions to address strategic challenges. You are confident in developing and selecting digital, data and technology solutions, with proven expertise in delivering data solutions.  You are conversant with modern data platforms and concepts and how these translate into robust solutions.  You understand how to tell powerful stories with data.

Continual improvement. You understand how to analyse data services and processes to seek and identify areas of improvements. You appreciate and manage advanced and complex situations across more than one operational/business function or programme. You know how to gather insight from senior stakeholders and communicate improvement results clearly to them.

Capability building. An engaging, open leader and people manager committed to building capability, coaching, and developing diverse staff groups to be high performing teams; with experience of building capability and leading change.

Relationship management. You have excellent communications and influencing skills and are adept at establishing strong, collaborative working relationships with a diverse set of customers and suppliers with a broad range of requirements. Able to actively manage multiple stakeholder perspectives, across levels of seniority.
