We're looking for an exceptional Senior Network Engineer to help us make a difference to our planet.

Our Senior Network Engineer will be based at Exeter HQ with hybrid working.

As our Senior Network Engineer, your total reward package is potentially worth up to £45,545.00 per annum, which includes basic salary, RRA, potential corporate bonus and employer pension contributions.

Your starting salary will be £30932.00 with opportunities to progress to £33925.00 over time. New joiners to the Met Office will start on the salary band minima.

You will receive a Recruitment Retention Allowance (RRA) of £2500.00 per annum paid quarterly, pro-rated from the date of taking up the appointment This role will qualify for an RRA allowance from 1st April 2022 to 31st March 2024.

Job Purpose

As our Senior Network Engineer , you will work with cutting edge technology, helping to keep Met Office employees and contractors connected both internally and to the outside world and supporting our world-leading scientific capabilities.

This is an exciting time to join the team. You will be exposed to a mix of complex, technical issues and large scale lifecycle projects. There are opportunities for experiences in data centre networking, next generation firewalls, cloud-based security solutions and SD-WAN. The team encourages and promotes knowledge sharing and mentoring for service improvements and professional development.

The key duties are:

Install, document, maintain and troubleshoot networking equipment.

Assist in the supervision of network engineering works, at Exeter HQ and remotely.

Respond to and take ownership of challenges, investigating and diagnosing complex technical network problems, working with users, colleagues and suppliers as appropriate.

Implement changes as required by the business to meet the demands of systems delivery, including content switch and firewall configuration.

The maintenance of local and wide area networks for communication of data, voice, text or images within one or more computer systems.

Work closely with experts and lead network specialists within the Met Office.

This is a great next step for a junior network engineer looking for a new challenge or a senior network engineer looking to work on a variety of networking technologies.

Essential Qualifications, Skills & Abilities

Current formal qualifications in networking (e.g., CCNA, CCNP) or equivalent knowledge and experience.

Proven enterprise networking technical ability.

An understanding of network security best practices and technologies with a demonstrable knowledge of firewalls, secure access, and secure configuration.

Proven analytical ability and problem-solving skills.

Experience of working in an ITIL-based (or similar) support environment.

Effective planning and experience communicating technical concepts, problems and solutions to colleagues and customer stakeholders.

We operate an on-call roster in Technology to provide 24/7/365 support to respond to operational service requirements. This post may be part of an on-call roster and the postholder would be required to participate in an on-call roster where in operation.
