Who is Lloyds Banking Group and where does this role sit?

Lloyds Banking Group is on the mission to build the bank of the future, and we need help to do it. Continuing our extensive transformation programme, we're redefining what a bank needs to be

From the inside out. Our technology, our culture, and our mind-set is changing, all to show what an engineering-led organisation can do. This vacancy is in the Commercial Banking division, within the Origination value stream. Our purpose is to create and deliver products that enable clients to grow their businesses. Those businesses provide services that millions of customers across the UK rely upon, day-to-day and especially in their time of need.

We're seeking to recruit a strong Lead SRE/Platform Engineer to support our journey onto the Azure Public Cloud Platform. This is a key time in our journey, and we're seeking people who will enjoy the opportunity to shape the direction and success of our new team.

What will you spend your time doing?

You'll work in a hybrid role which combines Site Reliability, Platform and Systems engineering, to build and run large-scale, distributed, fault-tolerant systems. The diversity, intellectual curiosity, continual learning, problem solving and openness to learning are key to its success.

Our Engineers are passionate about ensuring the services, both internal and external have extreme reliability, uptime appropriate to users' needs, resiliency, architectural simplicity, as well as continually seeking to find improvements.

You'll have the opportunity to deal with complex challenges, while using your expertise in coding, algorithms, complexity/forensic analysis and various system design strategies to tackle those challenges.

Much of your focus will be on optimising existing systems on Azure, building new Azure PaaS and IaaS solutions for services currently not running on Azure and eliminating manual work through automation wherever feasible. A further stage will be to apply those skills to GCP.

You'll work with people from a wide variety of backgrounds, experiences and perspectives. We encourage collaboration and mentoring people in DevOps methodologies that are supported by solid engineering practices. Self-direction is important, and we strive to create an environment that supports this through trust, learning, and mentorship.

Specific activities you could be responsible for include;

A role should not define you, therefore we prefer to work with people that have well-honed skills, experience, and knowledge in varying specialisms. Below is a list of some of the specific activities you could be responsible for depending on your background, but no single role will involve all of these:

Container Image Management & Security

Service Mesh

Kubernetes

CI/CD Automation (Build & Release)

Micro Services

Application Services

Automated Unit/Integration/Load Testing

Performance Testing & Monitoring

Logging, Monitoring & Alerting

Networks

API Gateway Management

IAM - Identity & Access Management

Azure Policy Management

Cloud Security

Cost Management

To support our new platform, we understand that a wide range of skills are vital and those skills can only be satisfied through a self-organised and highly cohesive team. Our goal is to build that team and support each member in developing their expertise, technical leadership and career.

This means we need people who love to mentor, but also love to learn from their peers continually, all to ensure the team is constantly evolving together.

This would be a great role if you;

Are working as a senior engineer and looking to take the next step.

Are a person who enjoys a hybrid role involving solution design, architecture considerations while still coding hands on 60-80% of the time.

Are interested in the opportunity to influence the commercial direction of our public cloud offering.

Enjoy working in a dynamic team who encourage experimentation and exploration of different technical solutions.

As a minimum to be considered, we would need to see evidence of;

Prior work experience at a senior engineering level within the field of DevOps.

Very strong DevOps skills with expertise in integration tools like Jenkins, Azure DevOps, Nexus, and Git

Kubernetes & Istio (AKS an advantage)

Experience programming in at least two (but not all!) of the following languages: Java, Groovy, Scala, Python, Go, C++, JavaScript, PowerShell or Bash/Shell

Systematic problem-solving approach, comfortable gathering requirements and strong

Communication skills and a sense of ownership

Knowledge of effective cloud architecture solutions.

We have a long list of desirable skills, but these really are an added benefit to us, so assuming you have the skills above please apply......even if you don't have all of them.

What support will I get around my career?

Whatever your aspiration, you can expect excellent benefits, training plans, personal development and a career that is enriching, rewarding and full of opportunity, which is directly linked to your drive for success.

What would you get in return?

We're dedicated to giving you opportunities and support to develop you both professionally and personally to optimise your potential!

As a new colleague to the team, you'll join us on our journey to build a 21st century bank that reflects modern Britain and craft an inclusive culture where all colleagues feel encouraged and valued.

A role within our team will provide the chance to work flexibly and collaboratively. We'll take your personal and professional development very seriously and enable you to make a positive difference to the overall teams' mission. Lloyds Banking Group is committed to building a workforce which reflects the diversity of the customers and communities we serve, and to building an inclusive environment where all our colleagues can be themselves and succeed on merit.

You'll also receive a package that includes:

Discretionary bonus

Cash sum of 4% which you can exchange for a variety of benefits or simply take the cash

Private Medical Insurance

Pension, where we'll give up to a max of 15%

Share plans

30 days holiday plus public holidays
