We're looking for an exceptional Software Engineer to help us make a difference to our planet.

Our Software Engineer will will work a hybrid pattern of homeworking and onsite at our Exeter HQ .

As our Software Engineer , your total reward package is potentially worth up to £45625.00 annually, which includes basic salary, market supplement, potential corporate bonus and employer pension contributions.

Your starting salary will be £30932.00 and you will have opportunities to progress to £33925.00 over time. New joiners to the Met Office will start on the salary band minima.

In addition you will be paid £2,500 per annum as a market supplement to reflect the demand for your skills. You will be paid this market driven allowance from April 2022 until March 2024 in your monthly pay whilst performing this role.

Job Purpose

As our Software Engineer , the key duties are:

Delivering tools and life cycling requirements to ensure existing systems are well maintained.

Providing technical support to operational services, based in the cloud or on-premise (mainly Linux based).

Proactively addressing issues which have a wider impact on service delivery;

Work with the appropriate processes to manage Change, resolve Incidents and manage Problems on the services you have responsibility for.

Support and develop services proactively in terms of monitoring, lifecycle management, capacity planning and service improvements.

Produce and maintain procedures and other documentation for colleagues, other support teams, users, IT Operations and customers.

Participate in knowledge transfer activities to enable identified tasks to be transferred to 2nd line support.

Essential Qualifications, Skills & Abilities

Enthusiasm and experience of pushing the boundaries of technology and a positive attitude to making a difference

A working knowledge of implementing and maintaining operational IT Services, ideally having experience with two or more of the following: AWS, Java, Python, SQL, CI/CD, Bash shell scripting.

A genuine interest in solving complex technical problems

A drive to develop your skills

Demonstrable experience of working in a team, contributing successfully to achieving goals

We operate an on-call roster in Technology to provide 24/7/365 support to respond to operational service requirements. This post may be part of an on-call roster and the postholder would be required to participate in an on-call roster where in operation.
