As a Business Analyst within our Data team, you'll play a pivotal role as the interface between our data sources and service users who want to draw on new datasets and data pipelines to support and inform their work. You'll work closely with colleagues to accurately define their needs and then work with Architects and Data Engineers to convert these into scoped and carefully specified requirements - agreeing the end-to-end approach to data product handling. You'll be an expert facilitator who can bring about good quality exchanges of knowledge, maximise data availability and reliability and identify, mitigate and assure governance concerns, such as security, privacy and compliance obligations.

You should already have some experience of data analysis, synthesis and modelling and be able to quickly familiarise yourself with the portfolio of data journey products that the team are servicing. Your structured approach to problem solving will enable you to produce scalable and flexible solutions and a readiness to challenge current practice and to ask searching questions will mean you will play your part in supporting continuous improvement. Strong communication and stakeholder management skills will be vital in establishing positive partnerships with colleagues, and it's important that you can adapt your approach to different audiences - especially when working on complex subject matter.

Job description The Business Analyst role is in the Office of the CDO team within the Data & Digital insights function and is core to delivering organisation wide data insights to help accelerate robust decision making, drive consistency and enable self-service across Ofgem.

As a Business Analyst you will be the interface with Data and insight service users, who are seeking to gain insight from the data Ofgem hold and who are seeking to introduce new datasets and data pipelines to the enterprise data platform. The role collaborates with internal and external Subject Matter Experts. You will digest these needs and coordinate with Architects and Data Engineers to convert these into scoped and carefully specified requirements via documenting user stories. You will be responsible for upholding Ofgem's data governance rules to assure it meets it security and data privacy requirements.


As a Business Analyst within the Data team you will be an expert facilitator who prioritises inclusivity and good quality exchanges of knowledge. Communication and ensuring stakeholder engagement is central to the role throughout the data onboarding lifecycle. You will be the kind of person who challenges the status quo about Ofgem's priorities and its approaches to and ways of working and leveraging Data. You will encourage colleagues to support their assertions with evidence, ensuring that our work maximises positive outcomes for stakeholders.

You will be expected to continuously develop your capabilities by working with Senior colleagues and the wider analytical community, enabling you to promote and continuously improve best practices. You will be interested in understanding how to identify, mitigate and assure governance concerns, such as security, privacy and compliance obligations, while also maximising data availability and reliability; be responsible for ensuring colleagues engage appropriately with stakeholders. You will be familiar with the portfolio of data journey products that the team are servicing. You will drive continuous change and best practice in the team and the organisation as a whole.

The ideal candidate will take a structured approach to problem solving and will produce scalable and flexible solutions appropriate to the either operational or analytical use cases.

The successful candidate will work as part of a cross-disciplinary team and will be confident in stakeholder management, able to rationalise decisions and articulate best practice principles to both technical and non-technical service users.

Data and analytics driven insights are critical to Ofgem and an essential part of delivering its regulatory aspiration and vision, business data analysts will play an important role in enabling this by shaping and documenting business requirement and processes into the data foundations of the organisation.

This role works closely with the Chief of Staff, Chief Analytics Officer and the Insights Data Architecture team as well as the DDAT delivery teams. Responsibilities Design and detail the end-to-end approach to data product handling (data collection, ingestion, transformation and calculation)
Assure that your work and the work of colleagues meets defined design, architecture and documentation standards
Ensure principles of privacy and security are assessed and designed into data solutions
Encourage teamwork and communication, especially between Data Engineers, Quality Assurance and Subject Matter Experts
Work in an agile way and to do so closely with colleagues
Be knowledgeable about the portfolio of data journeys
Provide succinct documentation to support knowledge retention and training
Be willing to develop best practices and new approaches to working
