Our reward package

The Met Office is recruiting for a Senior Software Developer based at Exeter HQ with hybrid remote working.

As our Software Developer, your total reward package is potentially worth up to £45545.00 annually, which includes basic salary, RRA, potential corporate bonus and employer pension contributions.

Your starting salary will be £30932.00 and you will have opportunities to progress to £33925.00 over time. New joiners to the Met Office will start on the salary band minima.

In addition you will be paid £2,500 per annum as a market supplement to reflect the demand for your skills. You will be paid this market driven allowance from April 2022 until March 2024 in your monthly pay whilst performing this role.

Job Purpose

This role is within our recently expanded Defence technology team, who are responsible for developing, maintaining, and supporting advanced meteorological-based visualisation services for use by our Defence customers around the world. You will be part of a talented development team to find innovative ways of enabling our customers to make the most of our world leading meteorological data. You will be joining at an exciting time as we work to modernise our systems to make best use of new technologies such as AWS. We will help you develop your skills, express yourself and make a real impact. You will also work with and learn from other technology and science experts from the Met Office, its global Defence partners, including MOD, Nato and the US Air Force, and other highly skilled partner organisations such as Amazon. This is a unique opportunity to work with a cutting-edge team and the Met Office's world leading science and technology capability to enable MOD and its key allies to gain optimum advantage and achieve operational success.

A developer delivers software components that form part of a product. In this role, you will:

Configure software to meet user needs

Follow best-practice guidelines and help to improve those guidelines

Prepare clean, secure, and well-tested systems

Coach and mentor more junior colleagues

Operate the services they build and identify issues in production

Essential Qualifications, Skills & Abilities

1. A Proven ability to plan and lead development on sets of stories

2. Experience of delivering and supporting services

3. A User focus - you understand users needs and are able to translate that into a suitable product

4. Experience coaching and mentoring more junior colleagues

5. A proven ability to communicate easily, enthusiastically, and professionally with a range of customers

6. Demonstrable ability to improve system robustness, resilience and stability

Desirable Qualifications, Skills & Abilities
