We're hiring for a Software Engineering Technical Lead based in Exeter HQ with hybrid remote working.

As our Software Engineering Technical Lead , your starting salary will be £37418.00 and you will have opportunities to progress to £41159.00 over time. New joiners to the Met Office will start on the salary band minima.

Your total reward package is potentially worth up to £51767.00 annually, which includes basic salary, potential corporate bonus and employer pension contributions.

In addition you will be paid £6000 per annum as a market supplement to reflect the demand for your skills. You will be paid this market driven allowance from April 2022 until March 2024 in your monthly pay whilst performing this role.

Job Purpose

You'll be a Software Engineering Technical Lead in the Observations Research & Development Department, you'll be helping deliver and operate the cornerstone environmental data ingestion and processing systems for the Met Office. The data we curate is the primary data that all other products are generated from within the Met Office - from driving the super computer to providing situational awareness for operational meteorologists. We look after a global IoT Environmental data collection system, lightning detection, radar and many other environmental data networks.

As a Software Engineering Technical Lead you'll be leading a passionate and dedicated Agile / DevOps team who mainly work with Python, JavaScript, TypeScript and Amazon Web Services to develop and maintain data ingestion, processing and data sharing systems related to observing networks, working alongside expert peers, shaping the future of the Met Office observing systems. You will coordinate design sessions, review the work of others and providing coaching and mentoring for team members.

You will work closely with the Solutions Architect and Delivery Manger to design and implement modern solutions and work collaboratively with your peers in the Observations community, building relationships and sharing your knowledge.

Essential Qualifications, Skills & Abilities

Delivery Focused - You'll be someone that has experience leading and empowering a team to deliver at pace whilst maintaining high standards

Technical Expert - You have deep experience in building applications which are well designed, tested and structured

Communication - Experience communicating technical concepts, problems and solutions to technical and business stakeholders

Problem solving and solution design - Ability to problem solve and steer development of solutions to complex technical and security related issues, and user needs

Desirable Qualifications, Skills & Abilities

Developing and deploying services in the cloud using Amazon Web Services

Test driven development or behaviour driven development

Agile methodologies

Code version-control systems (Git etc.) and continuous integration tools such as GitHub Actions and the AWS CodeSuite
