The Zonal group are one of the UK's largest technology providers to the hospitality industry. Our products are used by over 11,000 pubs, restaurants, and hotels.  We are a family business with Scottish roots. We operate from our modern head office in Edinburgh, our Midlands Division in Staffordshire, our Innovation Centre in Abingdon and hotel management solutions base in Cardiff - High Level Solutions, where this role sits. This role is remote.

At High Level Solutions we make smart, simple solutions for hotels.  From our clever developers, to our fantastic (yes, really!) support team, we work tirelessly to make our customers smile.  We are a dynamic business with a commitment to making hoteliers lives easier with our smart simple solutions.

Working at High Level Software is an opportunity to broaden your skill set, effect change and see the results of your work faster than the narrow constraints of most businesses. We're always on the hunt for the best talent to add to our team - and we are growing fast!

We live and breathe our core values. We are looking for people who are passionate, leading-edge, dynamic and friendly. We work hard at HLS but we also work hard to create a supportive and fun environment. We encourage smart decision making and always work as part of the whole team.  We pride ourselves on a culture of autonomy, and our conscientious, self-motivated and committed workforce enjoys an atmosphere of flexible working patterns and reciprocal support.

What you'll do

This role sits within the Technology Team, working alongside talented Developer and Test Engineers, improving and supporting our Property Management System - a critical Software as a Service (SaaS) platform powering our hotelier customers core businesses.

Our technology is evolving rapidly, and you'll play a key part in helping us drive this forwards.  We're adopting a modern Cloud native landscape with technologies like AWS, Docker, IaC (Infrastructure as code) and microservices.  We are firmly on our way - all-in on AWS with increasing functionality provided by microservices in ECS.

You'll play a key role in our upcoming growth and further modernisation.  You will help to ensure that our services delight our customers through meeting our architectural goals of operational excellence, resilience, performance/scalability, security and cost effectiveness (AWS Well Architected Framework).

Our talented team uses Agile Scrum and embraces DevOps.  You'll work closely with our Head of Technology (who you'll report to) and our Development Lead to drive delivery of cloud native (AWS) services, owning best practice use of the AWS cloud platform both in terms of development tooling (such as code delivery pipelines) and live service operation.

You'll combine your software and systems engineering expertise in tooling, configuration management, CI/CD pipelines and build operations to ensure we can develop, build and deploy smoothly and efficiently.  And you'll live the key DevOps tenant of automation, using technologies like CloudFormation, Terraform, and Python to deliver Infrastructure as Code.

This hands-on role will enjoy significant flexibility and autonomy, giving you the opportunity to both establish best practice in critical areas, and deliver improvements directly to realise that.

Early goals will be to:

Review AWS architecture and create improvement list vs WAF and other best practices

Lead the design, build and support of CI/CD delivery pipelines into production and pre-production environments, ensuring consistency, predictability, repeatability, and scalability of all build and deploy processes

Help deliver migration to serverless architecture where appropriate, such as migration of current instance-based ECS services into AWS Fargate, and of some micro-services to Lambda.

Who you are

You will have a background in software development, build and release engineering or Cloud operations, having spent at least some of your career as a member of a product engineering, deployment and/or platform delivery team.  You will already have extensive AWS experience.

Great hands-on skills with AWS including expertise with core services:  EC2, RDS (pref Aurora), ECS, Lambda, API Gateway, CloudWatch, S3, SNS, SQS

Solid experience in scripting, tooling, automation, and Infrastructure as Code (IaC), ideally using a combination of Cloud Formation, Terraform, Python and Bash

Very comfortable in Linux admin and networking, and ideally web delivery stacks inc. NGINX

Comfortable with databases, ideally MySQL and Aurora;  Redis and MongoDB a plus

You have in-depth knowledge and experience of automated build systems, CI/CD methodologies and technologies such as Git, experience in AWS Code* a bonus.  Comfortable in provisioning modern CI/CD pipelines.

Understanding of containerisation and Docker, both locally for dev and within AWS ECS

A self-starter with a passion for technology and problem solving, with excellent analytical skills who thrives in a fast-paced autonomous environment

Quick to spot opportunities and new capabilities in technologies, continually improving processes, deployment models and cloud architectures;  experience of instrumentation and performance optimisation

A champion of ‘monitor everything, document everything, automate everything'

Able to see the bigger picture, delivering incrementally towards that

A strong collaborator, organised, with a safe pair of hands

A team player that enjoys influencing change and leading areas within their technical expertise.

Comfortable interacting with mixed audiences of Support, Development/Engineering and Test

A champion of robustness, consistency and cyber security

Critical thinking skills, a delivery-oriented attitude, with an attention to detail

Minimum 2 years' experience building, deploying and maintaining production services

Ideally AWS certified (Associate Solution Architect and/or Developer)

What we value

Teamwork, Innovation, Passion, Professionalism, Accountability and Customer Obsessed  are the values we believe make us the company we are.  You should be able to demonstrate a genuine passion and aptitude for technology; we are proud of our ‘geek' credentials!  And we value the ability to quickly learn more than a perfectly aligned current skill-set.
