Knowledge and Experience

Key tasks will include…

? To play a leading role on the full software development lifecycle of projects - including analysis,

design, production, testing, documentation, implementation and service transition.

? To produce both client-side and server-side applications/systems, typically web- and/or cloud- based,

using the wide range of technologies employed by the E-Development team. These include (but are

not exclusive to) APEX, Java, Spring Java, JDBC, SQL, Groovy, Grails, RabbitMQ, XML/XSLT,

HTML, JavaScript, UML and other languages/ technologies as required.

? To investigate the flow of information, its use and purpose within the School as appropriate.

? To assist with the development of IT strategy.

? Co-ordinate workloads with temporary staff:

o student assistants

? Provide second-line support (locating the cause of the problem) for software on which the APEX

Software Developer is sufficiently knowledgeable.

? Provide third-line support (debugging, bug-fixing) for software on which the APEX Software Developer

is sufficiently knowledgeable.

? Provide support and sharing of knowledge to colleagues where required. In particular, in any area in

which the APEX Software Developer holds expert knowledge.

? To liaise with users and their colleagues, other staff within Data and Technology and other IT

Knowledge and Experience

? Have sufficient technology experience and expertise, especially in software analysis and design:

o professional qualifications in related areas;

o work experiences in related areas

? Become specialised in certain areas to act as a point of reference for others, both in education and IT:

o programming languages and software libraries frequently used for development and maintenance;

o other products and services commonly seen in higher education.

Communication

? Communicate effectively with staff at all levels in Data and Technology and other departments to

ensure high quality services are delivered.

? Communicate and liaise with external suppliers and sector partners.

? Produce technical documentations to a high standard, including specifications for requirements and

solutions, user manuals and other necessary internal notes/documents for knowledge base.

? Assist other staff of the department with regard to analysis, design and development of various

systems and applications.

? Attend appropriate conference/seminar events and disseminate information gained.

Teamwork and Motivation

? Be an active participant in a self-managing, Agile team.

? Liaise with users and their colleagues, other staff within Data and Technology and other IT providers,

LSE Departments and external organisations as appropriate.

? Lead on projects to develop new technical solutions for the School.

? Manage the customer relationship between Data and Technology and clients.

Liaising and Networking

? Build and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues in Data and Technology, other ICT

managers and other departments for the mutual exchange of information, the planning and delivery of

solutions and projects, and for the resolution of problems.

? Assist in vendor relationship management, including the development and enforcing of appropriate

service level agreements.

? Build and maintain relationships with external suppliers, consultants, sector partners and community

peers to obtain high-quality provision of products, solutions and information relating to the delivery of

Data and Technology solutions to the School.

? To work closely with the Data and Technology Operations group teams to ensure that data is

accessed securely and in a manner that does not have a negative impact on the LSE database

systems.

? To work closely with Data and Technology Operations teams to ensure that appropriate training

providers, and external organisations as appropriate.

? To keep skills and knowledge up to date both in relation to education and IT.

? To maintain an awareness of external changes with the potential to affect existing applications,

particularly when cloud-based (e.g. Azure, SharePoint, Office 365), and ensure that appropriate

measures are taken to sustain and/or improve the level of service.

? Follow the working practices, standards and methodologies agreed by the team.

? Any other duties as requested by the Head of Design and Build.
