Delivering an infrastructure that empowers everyone The challenge The Home Office is here to make our country safer. As well as working to reduce crime and enforce the law, we also protect the most vulnerable and have a proud history of providing refuge to those who have been displaced or are seeking asylum. Whether it's fighting crime, protecting our borders or combating slavery, the Home Office is at the cutting edge of public policy in this country and our work is some of the most rewarding in government. Our Digital Data and Technology (DDaT) division designs and builds critical Home Office systems and services. These help people apply for visas or passports; support policing and counter-terrorism operations; and protect the UK's borders. As a Senior Infrastructure Engineer, you'll undertake a mix of work across project-initiated design & build, business-as-usual process improvement and support. It's a role that will give you virtually unlimited opportunities to get involved in enterprise infrastructure, both on our premises and in the Cloud. Your challenge is to help us deliver exceptional public services that work for everyone.

The role Working as part of a team of Infrastructure Engineers, it will be down to you to build, administer, transition, support and maintain our infrastructure services throughout their lifecycle in line with our policies and strategies. Your remit will span integration, delivery and operation - you can also expect to input into our overall management activities such as workforce planning, budgeting, technology roadmaps and projects. As well as that, we'll need you to work with technical architects to translate architectural designs into operations. Your specific responsibilities will cover everything from taking the lead on SQL infrastructure solutions and services and system design reviews through to managing the planning of system and acceptance tests and troubleshooting issues across different technology capabilities. We run an on-call rota which means you'll occasionally need to work out of normal office hours. About you We're looking for someone with a passion for infrastructure engineering and ideally, either a computer science degree of the equivalent level of experience. You'll certainly need to bring a knowledge of the fundamental principles of DBMS, technical expertise in Windows SQL server administration, configuration and troubleshooting, and experience in deploying SQL. That should include the ability to set it up for snapshotting, performance tuning, backup, availability, upgrades, patching and indexing. Your SQL capabilities will also need to cover scripting, administration and security protocols for client or server environments deployed using Cloud solutions on Windows platforms. Your technical skills should be backed up by excellent organisational, interpersonal and teamworking skills, a good understanding of databases and an aptitude for producing and maintaining accurate documentation and reports. Benefits In return for your expertise, we offer a range of benefits including a Civil Service pension, an environment with flexible working options, and continuing learning and development tailored to your role - all within a culture encouraging inclusion and diversity. Closing date: 4 February 2022.
