The Department for Education is looking to recruit a senior software developer in Bristol, Coventry, Darlington, Leeds, Manchester, Nottingham, Newcastle-upon-Tyne or Sheffield.

Job description

As a Senior Software Developer, you will be designing and building software that makes a difference to people. You will

  • Lead and provide technical support for a large team of developers
  • Work with the development community building sustainable digital products
  • Create and sustain modern development standards, practices and techniques
  • Support, coach and mentor less experienced developers
  • Advocate user-centric, agile approaches to deliver high-quality digital services
  • Help build and maintain a diverse, inclusive culture across the development community, growing awareness, inclusivity, and balance
  • Transform government into a modern, agile development centre by embedding practices such as Test Driven Development, continuous deployment, and DevOps
  • Sharing methods and technologies across teams, government, and the industry by helping to organise events

Responsibilities

Essential Criteria:

We are seeking talented Software Developers who can demonstrate knowledge of

  • Ruby,Ruby on Rails framework/ C#/.NET or similar
  • Test-Driven Development, CI/CD, DevOps and modern development workflows, ideally using GitHub
  • OOD, SOLID and design patterns
  • RESTful API design and loosely coupled microservices architectures
  • Unix-like operating systems such as Linux and macOS.
  • web application security and awareness of the OWASP Top 10 security vulnerabilities
  • Experience leading by example working with technical teams to deliver user-focused services in an agile environment
  • Enthusiasm for sharing knowledge, mentoring others in an inclusive multidisciplinary team

Desirable:

  • A cloud-first approach, experience of IaaS and PaaS solutions, understanding infrastructure-as-code and containerisation
  • Experience of mentoring/supporting colleagues, and a passion for building teams and communities

Desirable criteria will only be assessed in the event of a tie break situation to make an informed decision.

Technical skills

We'll assess you against these technical skills during the selection process:

  • Modern standard approach - to solve problems, using test driven development (TDD) techniques
  • Programming and build - Writing clear, concise and maintainable code using standard tools
  • A systematic approach to problem solving
