JBA Risk Management is the leading global provider of flood data products and has recently delivered the world's first global-coverage flood catastrophe model. Our models are known for their speed, resolution, configurability, and scientific robustness.

Oasis Loss Modelling Framework (Oasis) is the global leader in open-source catastrophe modelling. They are working to deliver a single, high-performance platform offering multiple models/views of risk from a variety of sources, promoting innovation and transparency.

JBA modelling enables people ranging from homeowners in the UK to farmers in India to obtain flood insurance, protecting their lives and livelihoods in doing so. Oasis is the platform in which these models are made accessible to their users. JBA and Oasis have worked closely together for more than a decade, and we seek to strengthen our technical as well as our strategic relationship. The opportunities for challenging and rewarding work in implementing JBA models within the Oasis platform continue to grow, alongside our shared modelling ambitions.

Are you bright, inquisitive, and keen to push the boundaries in delivering cutting edge technology?

Would you like to be a key element in the JBA-Oasis partnership, working as a Python Developer embedded within the Oasis product team, striving to ensure JBA models can be presented seamlessly via the Oasis framework? If so, come and work with us!

Your role:

You will be based in Oasis' offices in London but will work for JBA. You will be an integral part of both the Oasis and JBA teams, ensuring the full power of JBA's models is supported by the Oasis platform while also benefitting the wider cat modelling community.  Our teams are cross-functional, comprising software developers, model developers/analysts and business experts.  We work together to translate client requirements into fully functional product increments, within an agile product development environment.

A day in this role may include any or all the following:

  • Working with your teammates to agree how best to deliver on product requirements from a technological perspective
  • Proposing improvements to both JBA model code and Oasis, with the aim of clean presentation of cutting-edge modelling methods
  • Implementation of production-grade code, with "production-grade" meaning documented as appropriate to all users, accompanied by comprehensive automated tests and cleanly hosted within our CI/CD pipelines
  • Research and evaluation of technologies for use in developing and delivering our products. Our current toolset includes cython, dask, numba, numpy, pandas/geopandas, scipy, Git, Jenkins, and AWS, but we'll always welcome new ideas
  • Enhancement of the infrastructure necessary for high-quality product development/delivery, including that surrounding our CI/CD pipelines
  • Discussion with clients and well-known re/insurance industry figures (internal and external), to understand both their immediate needs and their vision of the future of catastrophe modelling. This ensures we are always capable of delivering the most valuable product possible

The team member we are looking for:

You are interested in what we do. You are willing to ask questions and learn. You are a people-person, capable of seeing and appreciating a variety of perspectives. What else would we like to see?

  • At least three years of commercial Python programming experience, across the software development lifecycle
  • Strong numerate ability
  • Effective communication skills, both written and verbal
  • An appreciation of the value of clean software designs/architectures, including how to create them in practice
  • Experience of solving computationally intensive problems involving large datasets and identifying/eliminating performance bottlenecks

  • Exposure to high performance/distributed computing
  • Expertise in development of web APIs
