Who are we looking for? The CODAS & IT Department in which the role is based provides essential services and consultancy for a wide range of computing requirements. These cover office computing, high performance computing, scientific computing, data acquisition and control and data analysis, all of which are supporting the UKAEA's work on fusion energy research. As the UNIX Systems Engineer Lead, you will need to be a subject matter expert (SME) in Linux systems, providing technical leadership for the strategic direction of the Linux based services used at UKAEA and the Linux Admin Section. You will lead and manage the activities of the Linux Systems IT team, with particular emphasis on people management to anticipate future activities. What will you be responsible for? - Provide the technical leadership and expertise for the planning, development, implementation, management and support of a site-wide Linux systems and services architecture that ensures resiliency and high-availability - Lead on the research and implementation of best practice usage of UNIX based systems and tools - Responsible for identifying innovative, and where possible, automated approaches for system administration tasks. Once identified lead on the implementation of such approaches - Accountable for the development, management and operational support of the site's Linux Operating System installations across the HPC, system server and desktop systems - Responsible for development, management and operational support of the UKAEA Linux systems data backup systems. - Responsible for the implementation and management of virtual machine clusters. - Lead and manage the Unix team including performance appraisals and reviews. Qualifications Essential skills, experience and competence required - Extensive experience of managing Linux based systems, preferably in a research environment - Excellent knowledge of Linux Operating Systems with experience of the Fedora/Scientific Linux/CentOS operating systems Expert knowledge in the following: - virtual machine systems and clusters, preferably with experience of the ProxMox VM management system - batch queueing systems, such as Sun Grid Engine - deploying Linux clusters, using Kickstart, PXE, tftp, IPMI - using OpenLDAP, Kerberos, PAM, SASL - configuration management frameworks and automation tools such as CFEngine - setting up High Availability systems, using technologies such as pacemaker, Corosync, crm and DRBD - Experience in line management - A deep understanding of file systems and file servers including distributed and object-based systems (e.g. Ceph) - Excellent interpersonal and communication skills   Desirable skills, experience and competence - Good understanding of data networking - Knowledge of current techniques and trends in Linux systems and IT - Some experience of Solaris OS - Knowledge of email delivery processes Additional Information What we offer - A competitive salary  - A culture committed to being fully inclusive, supported by a Being Inclusive Strategy and Inclusion Ambassadors - An Employee Assistance Programme and trained Mental Health First Aiders, with a full calendar of health and wellbeing initiatives - Flexible working options including family friendly policies  - Emergency leave (paid) - 30.5 days' annual leave (including privilege days and 3 days between Christmas and New Year) increased with length of service - Wide range of career development opportunities (e.g professional registration, internal promotions, coaching and mentoring programme)  - Outstanding defined benefit pension scheme  - Annual corporate bonus scheme  - Relocation allowance (if eligible) We welcome applications from under-represented groups, particularly from individuals from black and other ethnic minority backgrounds, including nationality and citizenship, people with disabilities, (visible and hidden) and women.
