Responsible for the development, implementation, documentation and support of resilient and robust server infrastructure to deliver both infrastructure and corporate systems within Infrastructure Operations. Primary responsibility will be for monitoring and automation solutions, ensuring interoperability between central systems (including server infrastructure and networking). Client DetailsA world leading research institution providing top quality academic, social and cultural facilities to thousands of students.DescriptionThe System Specialist (Monitoring and Automation), Fully Remote, duties will include:Acting as the technical lead in this area Identify key components/services that need to be monitored.Identify key tasks and processes that can be automated and develop the associated solution.Provide technical support for the Operations and Service Desk teams.Providing training and documentation to the Operations and Service Desk teams.Validate documentation produced by Operations and Service Desk teams.Assisting with the development ofICT systems including: Undertaking option appraisals, selecting and procuring new systems.Systems design and capacity planning.Installation of new systems, including configuration, testing, migration and training.Delivering a range ofICT systems including: Upgrading and maintaining existing hardware, firmware, applications and tools, flagging conflicts to the Head of Systems.Ensuring appropriate security and backups arrangements are in place.Ensuring that systems are configured and maintained to provide the appropriate security and resilience.Monitoring hardware and system performance.Monitoring performance of contractors and suppliers.Resolving faults, ensuring appropriate interoperability between systems and providing general support.Ensuring that full systems documentation is produced and maintainedDecommissioning systems at the end of their life cycle.Ensuring appropriate consultation with faculties and central units about the support and development of ICT systems.Ensuring appropriate process review work and policy redevelopment is built into system changes.Leading small projects or project strands and contributing to projects as requiredIdentifying and sourcing appropriate IT training and consultancy.Keeping abreast of relevant technologies in order to assist with integrating monitoring and automation solutions into Infrastructure Operations systems.Supplier negotiations as appropriate.Assisting with the development and delivery of ICT systems support strategies with partner institutions as required.Working with other members of the Infrastructure Operations teams to provide and receive the support required to ensure the delivery of areas of responsibility.Supporting application developers who are typically not expert in operating systems, networking and storage infrastructures.The Systems team is currently responsible for the selection, design, implementation, management, support and decommissioning in the following areas:Physical and virtual server hosting Data storage Operating System builds, support and patchingAuthentication servicesSystem/Operational Monitoring System Management Email services End User Devices Network printing servers ProfileThe System Specialist will have:IT related degree (or equivalent qualification) or equivalent experienceDemonstrable experience of systems development including managing enterprise-level secure server infrastructure.Experience or system design, capacity planning and operational monitoring.Experience of System and Operational Monitoring development. Experience of SCOM would be advantageousExperience of Microsoft and Linux operating systems.Experience of server virtualisation (VMware)To stand out, ideally you have some of the below experience:ITIL Foundation certificationExperience of system automation approaches and technology.Experience of System Centre Orchestrator would be advantageous.Awareness of cloud-based technologies such as Microsoft 365, Azure AD, and Inteune/EMSWorking experience of project managementExpert skills in current Linux (RedHat/ CentOS)Expert skills in current Microsoft Server operating systemsUnderstanding of the inter-relationships between server software, operating system software, hardware and network systems.Skills in Linux shell scripting (bash), text processing, SED and AWK.Experience of network based services, Active Directory, SNMP, CIFS,(SMB) and NFSJob OfferThe System Specialist, Remote Based Role, England will receive:Base salary of up to £47,000 depending on experienceRemote based positionFantastic, comprehensive benefits package
