Our mission is to build a new platform to bring storytelling into the 21st century and this role is critical in shaping the technology strategy and team to develop it.

Over the last two years Fictioneers have developed the MUST platform, which allows storytellers to create interactive narrative experiences delivered across multiple media types in both physical and virtual domains.

MUST was first used to deliver and orchestrate "Wallace and Gromit: The big fix up", an multi award winning real-time storytelling experience created in collaboration with Aardman Animations.

About the role:

This opportunity will see you join our small and distributed agile engineering team at a pivotal stage of growth as we refine our MVP into an enterprise ready SAAS platform.

The primary aspect of the role is to work alongside the Product, Operational and Architectural leadership to shape the technical team, development and operation to respond to and deliver the product opportunity. Bringing your expertise to coach the team, champion best practice, scaling the team and balancing offshore delivery with Fictioneers own capabilities and investment.

As technology leader you will work in a team as an experienced developer and help colleagues to solve problematic issues. You will evaluate the business tasks and ideas and come up with a tech stack and budget suggestions. You will work closely with the Architectural lead to understand the skills we have in place and help to shape the specialists that are required to develop the product from MVP through to early growth within deadlines and to execute immediate company tasks.

You will define future needs and lead software engineer selection and hiring, their onboarding, training, and management.

After an MVP has been deployed, the team will focus on making the product better, plan new features, scale teams to cover growing product tech support needs and develop a scalable optimized product infrastructure to raise efficiency.

The role will increasingly involve a hybrid of tech visionary, HR specialist, and team manager rather than solely being a highly-qualified developer.

We are a remote first team but we do have a studio space in Bristol and as a leader you will need to operate in both environments.

About you:

We are looking for a highly motivated and curious leader to share technical ownership over the full stack of our rapidly evolving platform. You should have experience of working in a lean startup, taking a product from MVP through to a fully scaled enterprise SAAS offering.

You should be interested in new and emerging technologies, be able to apply language agnostic best practices to our codebase, and strike the right balance between leadership, vision, perfection and delivery. While pragmatism should always be at the forefront of your mind, we like people who can champion their vision, inspire others, engage with new business ensuring alignment of capability and need, open to discussion while balancing both the practical and the inspirational.

You must have:

  • Leadership experience of technology development and operational teams
  • Experience of leading a SAAS startup
  • Good knowledge across a variety of systems  eg Javascript / Python / Vue etc so can guide on best practice and approaches
  • Understanding of cloud services and serverless architectures (GCP / AWS)
  • Well versed in industry best practice around personal data policy compliance and security standards
  • Advocate of continuous integration and test driven development

Ideally also:

  • Experience in the interactive/games/entertainment industry
  • Conference speaking - industry leadership
  • Containerisation

Culture:

We love storytelling, operating with a lean start up mentality, but with the backing and support of a global agency - WPP PLC.  We value working as a team, sharing responsibility for researching and bringing the concepts we create together to life.  Our goal is always towards the customer seeking to understand their needs and how best to realise these through the product we bring to market.

Trust and freedom are core to the way we work - believing our team will do the best to realise our vision and provide the freedom in which to relax as well as work.

Inclusivity:

We want to make our hiring as inclusive as possible, this job description has been reviewed by a range of employees and has passed a neutral language check. We have also reviewed our hiring process to make sure it offers flexibility to candidates that need it.
