As the UK Hydrographic Office (UKHO) moves forward to become a Cloud first organisation, there is a huge drive in the company to adopt Cloud technology, presenting an exciting opportunity for a Software Engineer with experience of Cloud platforms to play a key role influencing the strategic direction of UKHO in its adoption and ongoing use of the Cloud.

About UKHO

The UKHO is an executive agency, sponsored by the Ministry of Defence. We work with a wide range of data suppliers and partners, surveying and charting the world's oceans in order to develop and serve world leading software and data solutions to commercial shipping companies, navies and maritime organisations.

The UKHO provides data to its customers through a number of well-established web and desktop services. We are also moving into new markets for innovative maritime data products which will reach new and existing customers through Cloud-based software services and infrastructure. These services are developed by our in-house development teams and by external partners.

The role

The Principal Software Engineer - Cloud will be responsible for the implementation of our Cloud strategy and its ongoing evolution.

Acting as both a principal developer and Cloud leader, they will work with delivery and business teams, leading the day-to-day technical and best practice choices, ensuring that our Cloud adoption and ongoing implementation and software development meets industry best practice for quality and continuous delivery.

Responsibilities of the role include:

Leading, shaping and delivering technical best practice within software engineering and future capability for the Cloud, working across a range of technical and business teams

Acting as a subject matter expert around the design and delivery of Cloud applications

Creating and implementing infrastructure designs that reflect the major benefits of Cloud such as scalability, availability, redundancy, and security

Providing subject matter expertise to delivery teams around their adoption of Cloud solutions

Sitting on the relevant governance boards for approving Cloud designs and implementations

Ensuring that our Cloud designs meet the needs of the business while not accumulating technical debt

Ensuring that the whole lifecycle of Cloud adoption is managed

As our Cloud strategy looks to adopt a multi-Cloud approach, utilising the best Cloud solutions from Azure, AWS and GCP, the ideal candidate will need extensive experience of one or more of these platforms in a software development, technical design, operating, or architecture capacity. Experience of technical leadership, software, systems or data design, and a high level of knowledge and experience in lifecycle management, support and operation of digital products and services is equally important.

They will also need practical extensive experience of multiple modern programming languages (Python, Java, .Net) with a track record of designing, developing, and managing Cloud solutions across a range of applications and services.
