Why Riverford?

Every week, Riverford delivers organic food to around 90,000 homes and businesses across the UK. This takes loads of brilliant people, from growers to IT experts, and more besides!

We're a friendly, forward-thinking bunch, and our three core values - Stronger Together, Do Things Well and Independence - run through everything we do. We celebrate diversity, valuing, supporting and developing the whole person as an equal opportunities' employer.

In 2018, Riverford became employee owned. Working here makes you a ‘co-owner', our way of saying ‘employee'. It's not just a name - every co-owner can play a part in shaping Riverford. Success means much more than just profits; we want this to be a place people enjoy coming to work, and a business our co-owners feel proud of. In 2021, we were delighted to be awarded two-star Best Companies accreditation, recognising Riverford as an ‘outstanding' place to work.

We're also proud to be a B Corp - a certification for ethical businesses who work not just for profit, but also to benefit people and the planet.

What you'll be doing

You'll be joining our IT Client Systems Team, responsible for building and maintaining Riverford's websites and mobile apps. We're a small team of highly skilled engineers, with a breadth of knowledge and experience across web and mobile, security, testing and UX. It's a friendly and welcoming group; we'll be here to mentor you, supporting you to develop your existing skills and learn new ones, whilst working on features that will really make a difference for our users.

During the UK's first lockdown, we launched a new website to cope with an influx of new customers. We're now planning a range of new features, taking advantage of the flexibility of our new platform. We're also building on the success of Riverford's first mobile app, creating a new version with a more integrated user experience, better performance, and a simplified software stack.

Riverford is an e-commerce business like no other, and we have a website to match: a bespoke system, built in-house, that's both easy to use and allows great flexibility in how our customers shop. Along with our team, you'll be bringing exciting new functionality to our websites and mobile app; for example, taking advantage of our huge database of recipes, or adding novel personalised features - enabling Riverford to deliver ever improving products and experiences to our customers.

You'll need to build productive relationships with stakeholders and the rest of the team, and use an agile workflow to deliver continual improvements and solutions to real business problems. You'll be passionate about your craft, with an attention to detail and an appreciation of the complexities of building software for the web. You will be comfortable evaluating, suggesting, and defending approaches, and care about the improving state of our software.

We love functional programming, so a desire to program in a functional style is required even if you have no commercial experience of functional programming. We use JavaScript for our client systems, so you'll already be comfortable using JS and we'll help take your skills to the next level.

You'll take a considered approach to development, and be responsible for software excellence. Considering testing at all stages of the software development lifecycle, you'll work closely with the team to automate testing at the unit and functional levels wherever possible.

We take security seriously, performing our own automated security testing. Our public website and apps are regularly penetration tested by an independent party and our secure software development processes are accredited by the payment card industry.

We'll provide all equipment required, including a laptop (Linux or macOS), multiple screens, and any additional software or hardware you need. This is a permanent contract, 40 hours a week. Based at Wash Barn, Buckfastleigh, Devon, TQ11 0JU.

Skills & experience

We're less concerned about specifics than we are about cultural fit, and an ambition and capability to learn and develop your skills. If there's something on our list which is out of your comfort zone, that's fine - but we'd like to see you pick it up and run with it should you join us! That said, here are our ideal skills for this role: ES2019+ HTML, CSS, LESS and/or Sass Client-side frameworks - React, Vue, Svelte, and when to use them (or not) Mobile first, responsive design Accessibility Latin plant names (just kidding) Collaboration Agile / Kanban Functional programming The browser as a platform - web fonts, cookies, service workers, application manifests, etc. Your experience You'll be a keen enthusiast of web technologies. You'll have delivered at least one software project, not necessarily in a commercial setting but preferably working within a team. You'll have good knowledge of HTML and CSS. You'll have JavaScript development experience, preferably ES2019+. Salary
Up to £25,000 per annum d.o.e
