Lead SQL Server Database Engineer

70k base + 5k on-call + bonus + bens

As a highly established approved recruitment partner to this global financial services company we have been asked to assist in the hire of a Database Engineer to take a technical lead role with a small team of six database consultants that support a large SQL Server (half a petabyte) environment. This role will be a mix of project work and BAU.

Projects on the horizon include database upgrade, cloud first adoption and some separation projects. This role will suit a hands-on SQL Server Database Engineer who is happy taking a lead role from a technical perspective (not team / people management).

We see this as a great opportunity to join a very stable global financial services organisation investing heavily in IT transformation. Our client has offices in Southampton, Newcastle and London. It is anticipated that you may be asked to visit your closest office 1 day every 2 months.

Skills / environment

(Note: The hiring stakeholder has stressed candidates to not need all these skills)

SQL Server administration, monitoring, and performance tuning.

All SQL versions including legacy versions back to 2008 R2

Core engine

Azure SQL Database

Scripting and automation experience

PowerShell (or Bash or other), SQL (PL/SQL a benefit

Working with SQL Server & (optionally Oracle) on VMware and Azure Cloud

Azure Cloud platform

Azure (Administration and Deployment)

Modern Data Warehouse Architecture (Databricks, Azure Data Factory, Spark, etc.)

Creation and administration of ARM templates

Power BI Configuration, change and troubleshooting including PowerBI gateway

Windows Server administration and troubleshooting

Storage, networking, clustering

Administration of SSIS, SSRS, SSAS

Use of ServiceNow for Service Management and CMDB purposes

Scripting and automation

R, Python, Terraform, etc.

Configuration management with DSC/Chef/Puppet/Ansible, etc.

Continuous Integration, Continuous Delivery, Continuous Deployment

Azure DevOps (VSTS), Jenkins, Bamboo, Octopus Deploy, etc.

Working with Scrum, Kanban processes
