Who are we looking for?
 
The UK Atomic Energy Authority have an excellent opportunity for an IT Support Technician to join their shift team within the CODAS & IT department. The IT Support team consists of 15 employees who are responsible for providing IT support for circa 2000 on-site users (plus additional remote users) operating approximately 3000 Servers, PCs, laptops and other devices across the Culham site.
 
As a Support Technician, you will form part of the CST shift team providing 24/7 1st line support for experimental, scientific and business IT systems, primarily within the primary and secondary data centre facilities. This includes data centre infrastructure such as cooling and power systems, racks, servers, storage systems, plant computer systems, networks, printers, software and video conferencing services. In addition, the role involves the monitoring of services using various software tools.
 
You will be involved with the use and development of IT support services including internal processes and web-based intranet information systems. You will also maintain high standards of service delivery with an emphasis on timely and efficient management of tasks; to respond to or escalate incidents and requests.
 
You will also provide a vital first contact role in monitoring, diagnosing and resolving IT problems to ensure services are ready and available to the experiment and business users. The role involves working closely with 2nd/3rd line IT support teams as well as site facility teams and external service providers. The role also involves local area duties such as fire warden. 
 
What will you be responsible for?
 
- Provide 1st line hardware support for computer platforms including PCs, laptops, tablets, servers and storage arrays
- Provide 1st line support for data centre hosted hardware including Microsoft Windows, Linux, MacOS and IOS systems
- Provide support and monitoring of the site networks and service infrastructure
- Liaising with 2nd/3rd line support teams
- Support the data centre power and environmental systems
- Assist in the assembly and installation of IT computer racks and embedded systems
- Develop processes and procedure to assist the support team's tasks and activities
- Manage incidents and service requests via our IT service management tool
- Produce knowledge articles for inclusion into the ITSM tool to aid and promote user self-service
 
Qualifications
Essential skills, experience and competence required
 
- A-level or equivalent (e.g. BTEC, HNC) in an IT or science related subject
- Experience working within an IT support environment, specifically in a data centre support facing role
- Good hardware skills including the assembly, deployment and populating of data/network racks
- Installation and support of wired and wireless networks
- Knowledge of Microsoft Windows with optional MAC operating systems
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office 365 including Word, Excel, Outlook, OneDrive and SharePoint
- Good knowledge of PC, laptop, server, storage system and peripheral hardware
- Experience of using a recognised ITSM application
- Excellent communication skills
 
Desirable skills, experience and competence
 
- Experience of working and supporting a medium sized data centre
- ITIL Foundation V3/V4
