GenomeKey is a Bristol-based biotech startup developing a point-of-care in-vitro diagnostic device based on next-generation sequencing and machine learning, that will reduce the time taken to determine how to treat sepsis from days, to only hours. Our device combines whole genome sequencing, novel sample preparation, and machine learning to deliver results at an unprecedented accuracy and speed. Our diagnostic device will rapidly identify the bacteria affecting the patient, and which antibiotics will be effective. This saves lives, saves money, and saves our last antibiotics for when we really need them. We are looking to hire an experienced, self-sufficient machine learning engineer to develop GenomeKey's deep learning approach to interpreting bacterial genomics. The successful candidate will join our small development team, reporting directly to C-level management. They will be responsible for working within a small machine learning team to innovate unique and proprietary machine learning solutions to progress our state of the art antibiotic resistance analysis technologies. This is an exciting opportunity for a creative candidate to be able to work at the forefront of computer science and biotechnology, directly contributing to saving lives through cutting edge healthcare solutions. Responsibilities include: Working with a machine learning engineer to innovate novel solutions. Analysis of experimental data and results to create new research strategies for the team. Application of machine learning technologies to antimicrobial resistance analysis. Key techniques include deep learning, Pytorch, Tensorflow, Keras, Python, and signal processing. Working closely with our machine learning engineer to progress proof-of-concept ideas into production level, integration ready code. Scientific and technical contribution towards grant applications. A good candidate will have a passion for creating and implementing novel algorithms, and developing them into commercial solutions. We are looking for a candidate that enjoys the mathematical and research side of developing new solutions. They will have an enthusiasm for applying fundamental scientific principles to innovative problem solving. They will embrace working within a mixed scientific team of biologists and computer scientists, to develop new medical technologies. The candidate will have good scientific communication skills, able to share complex ideas at varying levels of technical depth. A good candidate will desire to work in a startup ecosystem, embracing learning on the job and adapting to new challenges. Technical Qualifications & Experience
Applicants should aim to meet the majority of the following skills and experiences, however candidates with varied technical backgrounds will be considered. Required: An academic background in machine learning Have a deep learning background, with experience in implementation A Master's in a scientific discipline such as Mathematics, Bioinformatics, Biology or Computer Science Be experienced in software engineering, fluent in high level programming languages, in particular Python Experience developing and reviewing machine learning code Ability to write technical documentation, papers, reviews and notes, and deliver technical information in a digestible format Experience developing, testing, and proving new hypotheses Ability to live and work in the UK, and willingness to travel to Bristol Desirable: A Masters or PhD in machine learning An understanding of biological concepts such as DNA, genomes, cells and bacteria Experience with Linux and common software development tools like Git or other VCS Industry experience working with machine learning development and application Evidence of using software development best practices where appropriate Knowledge or experience of cloud technologies like AWS and Google Cloud Company Benefits
