The UK Hydrographic Office (UKHO) have a number of exciting opportunities for software developers to join the new Enterprise Capability support team and play a key role in unlocking a deeper understanding of the world's oceans. Applications for Part time roles working 0.8FTE 29.6 hours per week or full time roles 37 hours per week are encouraged for these roles.

About UKHO

UKHO is an executive agency, sponsored by the Ministry of Defence. We work with a wide range of data partners to chart the world's oceans in order to develop and serve world leading software and data solutions to commercial shipping companies, navies and maritime organisations.

We are increasingly reliant on our ocean resources to meet the needs of today's fast-changing world.  Expanding industries include maritime trade, tourism and renewable energy, as well as new emerging sectors. As a result, there is a growing need to use and better understand the data about our oceans - or ‘blue' data.

Our Software Engineering Teams are at the forefront of this activity, using cutting edge technologies to ensure our data is easy to control, discover, buy and use.? What we do is important and can be vital to protecting life at sea, so our software is well designed to be secure and safe and built using quality engineering processes.

The role

As members of the Enterprise Capability support team, our Software Developers will be working to continuously improve our latest enterprise services, providing second and third line support, managing incidents relating to these services and ensuring timely communications with stakeholders and users. Key responsibilities will include:

Undertaking continuous improvement on enterprise services, such as optimising application efficiency, enhancing monitoring capabilities across multiple interconnected services, adding functionality in response to business needs

Managing incidents raised by users of these services, investigating and implementing fixes and communicating with stakeholders

Participating in agile team events such as stand ups, planning, reviews and retrospectives, including demonstrating improvements delivered by the team to stakeholders

Consulting with architects, business analysts and delivery teams regarding the support requirements for services that they are designing and delivering

We're looking for people who enjoy problem solving, tracing the root cause of issues, be it code or configuration. The ability to communicate technical ideas to non-technical business stakeholders is a key requirement.

We strive to allow developers to see work through with a minimum of context switching and most tasks are done in pairs to ensure quality. Everyone reviews code and everyone welcomes feedback. When major live incidents occur, we often swarm or mob to promote knowledge sharing and support each other during challenging scenarios. We offer at least one day a month for Software Developers to develop their own skills as part of our continuous professional development programme.

We welcome applications from candidates who have basic to a thorough understanding of C#.Net with experience of crafting good quality code, along with experience of working with Azure cloud technologies and automated deployments (e.g. Azure DevOps pipelines).

In return
