Description

Global Canopy is a data-driven think tank that targets the market forces destroying nature. We do this by improving transparency and accountability. We provide innovative open-access data, clear metrics, and actionable insights to leading companies, financial institutions, governments and campaigning organisations worldwide.

A major new project, Aligned Accountability, sits at the heart of our Corporate Performance programme and of Global Canopy's wider strategy and work. With 5-year support from the Norwegian Government, and working in partnership with ZSL SPOTT, the Accountability Framework Initiative, and other partners, the project will focus on bringing together existing data sets on company performance on deforestation. Partnering with SEI and Neural Alpha this dataset will be connected to the Trase and Trase Finance databases and the project team will work closely with the finance sector and ESG service providers to improve metrics on deforestation. These will ultimately guide more sustainable investment, improve risk management, support due diligence, and enable green product innovation.

Sitting at the heart of Global Canopy's strategy and work, the new Data Lead will help connect the dots across Global Canopy's data initiatives, laying the foundations for improved innovation, scale and efficiency. They will build out an impactful data strategy focused on the needs of our key targets in the private sector, government and civil society. This will ensure both excellence within individual data initiatives as well as a consistent approach across different initiatives, and with multiple external partners and suppliers. They will also have a deep understanding of commercial issues, as well as an appreciation for the issues and challenges around leadership on corporate disclosure and open data.

We are therefore looking for a talented leader who brings together strategic, technical and management skills required for this role, as well as a passion for the mission of Global Canopy.

Management: managing and growing a small team of data scientists in a matrix arrangement (including at partner institutions in some cases), supporting them to contribute effectively to the delivery of the data strategy across our diverse programmes. Working with other teams at Global Canopy, to support their uptake and use of data.

Successful track record of designing data architectures and managing complex databases. Working with corporate data or ESG service providers a positive.

Leadership and strategy skills, and the ability to coordinate and motivate colleagues, partners and supporters to align behind a common strategy.

Impact-orientation and agility, bringing new technologies and approaches to help our team rapidly and effectively access, visualise and share our data and insights, limiting reliance on external suppliers.
