Lead a team which will identify new technologies and uses of data that could affect information rights

Wilmslow, Cheshire with remote working options for part of the working week

Technology is driving fundamental changes to our society, driven by the critical role personal data is playing in our digital lives. What role could you play in influencing the way we support innovation and technological change while also protecting privacy and information rights?

About us

As an independent body serving the public, the work of the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) is interesting and immensely rewarding. We uphold information rights in the public interest, promoting openness by public bodies and data privacy for individuals. In the last year we have been involved with prominent issues ranging from addressing the use of intrusive technology in our personal lives, to the privacy implications of the management of the COVID-19 pandemic. Our work has never been so important or high profile.

The ICO's Technology and Innovation departments deal with some of the most complex privacy, data rights, data protection and emerging technology issues that society faces. The aim of the group is to make sure the ICO can assess and respond to these developments, and most importantly, to shape the future privacy, data and technology landscape.

We have vacancies for several positions across the directorate - roles that will help us shape how emerging technologies and information practices impact the lives of the UK public.

About the role

The Group Manager for Foresight will lead a team which will identify new technologies and uses of data that could affect information rights, and support the ICO in proactively assessing how to respond. This new team will sit across the two departments and consider the strategic, social and practical implications of data-driven technologies and innovations. It will also lead the ICO's research grants programme, manage our interface with academics and think tanks and input to strategic projects on high profile issues such as AI. This is an exciting opportunity to develop a team with a range of capabilities and a cross-departmental remit, working at the cutting edge of new developments in technology, and developing responses to the data protection and information rights issues they could present.

About you

You will have experience of developing horizon scanning functions or teams, analysing emerging trends and developments using a range of techniques. This may come from an information technology, consulting, market analysis, think tank, innovation, regulatory or policy environment.

You will possess strong research skills, with experience of identifying developments in data-driven technology and innovation and experience of building stakeholder communities to broaden your insights. You will also have excellent written and verbal communication skills including the ability to leverage data to drive decision making and explain technical matters to a non-technical audience.

How to Apply

The ICO is committed to promoting and enhancing equality, diversity and inclusion. We welcome and encourage applicants from all members of the community.
