A career defining opportunity to be at the centre of our transformation, leading software engineering, enterprise architecture and business analysis teams to realise our strategic vision.

 About the UKHO

UKHO is an executive agency, sponsored by the Ministry of Defence. We work with a wide range of data partners to chart the world's oceans in order to develop and serve world leading software and data solutions to commercial shipping companies, navies and maritime organisations. Our products ensure safe navigation and global trade efficiency and support other marine activities including economic development, environmental protection, resource exploration and utilisation, scientific research and security and defence.

To make the most of our oceans in smarter, more sustainable, and more responsible ways, we are on an exciting journey to become a world leading geospatial information agency.

The role

The Deputy Chief Technology Officer will work with colleagues in the technical operations side of the organisation to ensure software engineering, enterprise architecture and business analysis teams have the right tools and infrastructure through which they can deliver the organisation's strategic vision. Through your leadership you will ensure effective design and delivery of technology environments, help increase understanding of digital and technology, and ensure effective working with UKHO-wide standards, methods, tools, and governance structures. You will take ownership of the future technology roadmap and recruitment, training, and development of technology and digital skills across the teams.

Your average working week may involve:

Talking to internal delivery partners about a new proof of concept and how to take this forward with one of the embedded agile delivery teams

Carrying out an organisational-wide talk on the benefits of minimum viable products

Attending a sprint review run by one of the delivery teams

Taking part in a planning session with the practice leads to determine future resourcing

Presenting to the board on our latest delivery capabilities

Working with Head of Enterprise Architecture to review the current roadmaps in addressing legacy and technical debt

Taking part in team stand-ups

Talking with the Deputy CIO to ensure that new services are in a supportable state

Meeting with a skills working group to input into work to develop our talent pipeline

Planning out future technology horizon scanning
