Job Description

 

Who are we looking for?

 

RACE develops and produces world class, first-of-a-kind remote handling solutions in response to a broad array of technical challenges faced by UKAEA. This fosters a uniquely interesting, challenging and rewarding environment for project management.

 

What will you be responsible for?

 

Reporting to the Group Leader, the main responsibilities of the role will be the delivery of complex technical projects from conception to delivery. This will include:

 

- Providing leadership of complex technical projects from concept to delivery, including regular reporting and proactive stakeholder management of internal and external customers

- Inspiring and mentoring project team members, instilling good practice and transferring knowledge

- Cultivating an environment that promotes intelligent working and a SHEQ culture, through effective project deliver

- Establishing robust project plans and proposals and for delivery of work to plan and budget, escalating any issues for resolution when necessary

- Defining resource requirements for the projects, as well as providing line management to all direct reports including any development and performance issues

- Setting and monitoring standards in area of specialism and managing risk effectively, ensuring UKAEA policies and processes are followed

- Actively identifying opportunities for improvement and working with the Group Leader and Head of Operations to drive performance

- Contributing to the strategy of RACE through participation in the senior leadership team

- Ensuring lessons learnt and are captured from projects and applied, implementing mitigating strategies

 

Qualifications

 

Essential skills, experience and competence required

 

- Engineering degree or equivalent qualification

- Proven leadership experience through a track record of success in Project Management; delivering complex technical projects to budget, time and quality criteria in an engineering and / or technology environment

- Experience of managing project financials - budget, forecasts, actuals and earned value

- Passion for ensuring good project management practices and culture

- A proactive approach to SHEQ, with good appreciation of UK compliance requirements in design

- Strong commercial awareness with the ability to make sound economic decisions that maximise project value

- Excellent influencing and collaboration skills

- Experience of document control and change control systems

 

Desirable skills, experience and competence

 

- Professional project management qualification

- Experience of leading market engagement / procurement campaigns (including managing the preparation of tender and contract documentation) and contract management

- Experience of delivering works ‘on-site' under CDM regulations

- Good background knowledge and understanding of fusion science, technology and engineering

- Chartered status in relevant STEM discipline
