Mechanical Concept Designer

Location: Hampshire (On-site after COVID, suggested 3 days pw)

Duration: 12 Months

Clearance: SC Clearance or eligible for SC

Description of role:

* The team specialises in the design, manufacture and test of advanced electro-mechanical drives for military vehicles; both tracked and wheeled. The group have developed advanced drives for tracked vehicles in the form of an electric-cross drive transmission. The group have also developed in wheel drives (hub drives) and other drive systems for wheeled vehicles.

* The team now seek a concept designer to conceive and develop new vehicle drive systems primarily for military vehicle applications. The job will involve both the creation of new concepts; the adaption of existing concepts; and the application of existing drive solutions to different vehicle applications.

* The successful applicant will work as part of a design team, working collaboratively across multiple projects.

* The successful applicant will have substantial experience in gearbox and driveline design; and ideally an appreciation of electric motor design, vehicle systems (particularly suspensions and running gear).

* Although the primary purpose of this role is to focus on electro-mechanical drive-line, the job will on occasions, involve flexibility to work in other technology domains. Although the focus is "innovative concept design", it is expected that the successful candidate will be adept at leading packages of work, alongside subject matter experts, taking developments through the engineering lifecycle, from initial concepts, detailed models and drawings, through to manufacturing, assembly and test.

Role Requirements:

* Proven ability in innovation/concept design

* Proven track record of gear and gearbox/transmission design

* Appreciation of electric drive technology

* Appreciation of vehicle systems; particularly suspension and running gear

* Proven ability to assimilate requirements, communicate design trade-offs in order to establish effective design solutions

* Ability to provide input to design reviews including the preparation of technical material

* Ability to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team and problem solve and proceed where boundary conditions are malleable

* Proven ability to liaise with manufacturing suppliers

Desirable Skills and Knowledge:

* Dassault Systèmes SolidWorks

* SolidWorks Product Data Management (PDM)

* Siemens Solid Edge

* Siemens Teamcenter Product Lifecycle Management (PLM)

* Gear design to ISO 6336

* Application of BS 8888 geometric product specification, geometric tolerance specification and engineering drawings.

* Experience in both bespoke one-off design
