Are you passionate about data and new technology markets and interested in the challenges and opportunities that digital platforms pose for our society and the wider economy? If so, this is a unique opportunity to help the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) to be a thought leader in the space of artificial intelligence, technology markets and digital competition.

CMA works to promote competition for the benefit of consumers across all sectors of the UK's economy. In an increasingly digitalised world the markets we regulate are rapidly evolving. Towards the end of 2018 the Data, Technology and Analytics (DaTA) Unit was established to stay on the leading edge of data and technology, including developing machine learning tools to identify possible breaches of consumer law on digital platforms and applying natural language processing techniques to sift and review 100,000s of internal documents from companies, which we receive in the context of our cases.

In order for case teams to get to grips with technical content and to shape CMA policy we are growing our new capability, the Data and Technology Insights Team. The team will work hand in hand with our data science and data engineering teams to shape analytical projects that directly benefit consumers.

As a talented individual with a background in economics or law and strong interest in technology, the Senior Data & Technology Insight Adviser role you will give you substantial opportunity to make a real difference, shaping how we think about the regulation of data and technology markets and the activities of digital companies. You will keep abreast of new developments in the use of data and technology that affect consumers and competition and use this expertise to take a leading role in providing advice to our mergers and antitrust teams and on specific cases.

The role will be varied and may also include providing advice, and identifying other areas where the DaTA Unit's work will have impact. For example, the CMA recently provided advice to government on setting up a new Digital Markets Unit (DMU). This Unit will be housed in the CMA and undertake major work to ensure digital markets work well. The D&TI team will contribute to the establishment of the DMU including working directly on major market studies.

There is also opportunity to help the CMA be a thought leader in the space of technology markets and digital competition, bringing together your expertise in competition, with your knowledge of technologies and their implications for markets and wider society. And in the longer term help to develop and deliver impactful external events such as panel events, hackathons and unconferences that will help shape our understanding of the key issues and opportunities facing data and technology markets, and the actions that regulators might take to solve the problem.

The role requires experience in synthesising and communicating complex information and research about technical subjects, combined with knowledge of one or more technical areas (e.g. AI / ML, Cloud infrastructure, gene editing, automation and robotics, quantum computing, battery technologies) and the capability to rapidly learn about new technical subjects.

In return the CMA is a hugely diverse, rewarding and stimulating place to work - an opportunity to work for the public good and to stretch and develop yourself in doing so. We offer generous benefits, including an excellent pension scheme, at least 25 days leave (increasing to 30 over five years), and generous maternity/paternity leave provision. You can also take advantage of interest-free season ticket loans, a cycle to work scheme, our employee assistance programme and favourable consideration of flexible working.

The CMA are an accredited Disability Confident Employer, and we are an equal opportunities employer, welcoming suitably qualified applicants from all backgrounds.

We recruit by merit on the basis of fair and open competition, as outlined in the Civil Service Commission's recruitment principles.
