We are committed to being supportive in everything we do: In our work In our communications To our environment To each other To ourselves About the Job We are undergoing a transformation of our IT organisation to improve the quality and capacity of our services and are seeking an energetic and passionate Assistant Director of Capabilities & Innovation to lead the development and enhancement of our IT services, products, and systems, whilst overseeing the management and planning of new business opportunities to directly support our circa 7000 staff and indirectly our 630.000+ residents and businesses in two vibrant London boroughs. This role will lead a diverse team of around 35 to support existing application estate and develop new technologies and capabilities for the wider IT department of circa 130. The role will lead, develop and professionalise the technical and non-technical capabilities required to enhance the service's offering, adapting to the needs of a 21st-century technology landscape.  With a good understanding of current IT trends, the role offers the autonomy to explore possibilities to generate additional revenue via the various IT workstreams. Developing long-standing relationships, the Assistant Director works with partners across both councils to identify the business challenges, opportunities, and future direction of the various services, to increase collaborative working and cost-saving initiatives - promoting the vision of ‘getting better together'. About You We're looking for a competent leader with a strong background in driving innovation across the IT space. Experienced in the design and execution of technology roadmaps, you will be able to display your expertise within strategy and planning. With an understanding of the technology landscape either in public or private sectors, you will be an innovator who thrives on the ability to look at things differently, presenting prospective IT solutions that significantly impact the delivery of an IT service. Working with a talented group of individuals, you will be required to coach, develop and motivate teams to reach a level of operational excellence, whilst establishing a culture of continuous improvement and learning to maintain a capable and high-performing workforce. About Us The London Borough of Newham is located only 5 miles east of London. It is well positioned with access to all major networks in London and the south east.  It is well connected by public transport with, bus, tube and DLR. When the Crossrail service opens it will call at Custom House close to our council offices and also Stratford station and from there to central London. The London City Airport which serves major European cities is located at Royal Albert Dock. Newham has the youngest overall population in the country. It was one of the six host boroughs for the 2012 Summer Olympics and contains most of the Olympic Park including the London Stadium. It has a thriving arts quarter with the both the Theatre Royal Stratford East and Stratford Circus Arts Centre offering excellent entertainment for all the family. There is the University of East London which has two campuses in Newham, one in Stratford and another next to the regenerated Royal Albert Dock. It also has a large Westfield shopping Centre in Stratford which has all the major retailers there.
