Help put data exploitation at the heart of our fight against serious and organised crime.

Human traffickers, firearms and drugs dealers, cybercriminals and exploiters of children.... at the NCA, we work at the cutting-edge of law enforcement, tackling those posing the most serious threat to UK life.

Now, more than ever, serious and organised criminals are finding new and more ruthless ways to prey on vulnerable people and the wider public. And as the crime landscape continues to evolve, so do we. Our teams work creatively and collaboratively, to find new and unexpected ways to stay ahead. Join them and your work will have a serious impact, as you help us protect millions of people across the UK.

Your role

By joining us in National Data Exploitation Capability (NDEC), you'll become part of the UK's national security capabilities focused on tackling the greatest threats to the UK population and interests through the use of data exploitation and data science.

Right now, we're looking for a Software Engineer (DevOps) to join a fast-paced team that offers plenty of scope for learning. You'll support our operational teams by making sure our NDEC data systems are secure, stable, and reliable. Specifically, you can expect to advise upon, develop and deliver data services to support operational challenges as well as building, testing and maintaining data systems. Your role will also involve delivering automated data services, including writing infrastructure as code, and making sure our software meets our quality and confidentiality standards. Across everything you do, you'll work collaboratively to develop your skills and share knowledge within the technical team and wider organisation.

You may also be expected to work directly or indirectly in tackling child sexual exploitation and abuse. This may involve exposure to child sexual abuse images and material, so please consider the sensitive nature of our work before deciding to apply.

Your background

You'll need a proven ability to write and test code and programs for the deployment of large data systems using CI/CD pipelines. Experience in service support is important and you'll need to be able to use DevOps or DevSecOps practices. We'll also want to see that you have an awareness of designing solutions with embedded information security controls specifically engineered to mitigate risks. This role is perfect for an ambitious self-starter who can deliver, drive change and create improvements at pace.

A relevant degree and a knowledge of cloud-based analytical platforms would both be beneficial.

Rewards

We take your career and development seriously and want to help you build a truly successful career with us and the wider Civil Service. So, we'll make sure you receive the right training, guidance and coaching as well as regular performance and development reviews. What's more, as a Civil Service employee you're also entitled to a large range of benefits, including generous annual leave, flexible working, a contributory pension, staff bonuses and recognition, volunteering days, childcare vouchers and other salary sacrifice options, and an employee discount scheme.

The breadth of our capabilities means there's no such thing as a typical NCA officer. We recruit people from virtually every walk of life, from police to project management, crime analysis and commercial procurement. Join us and we'll give you the powers, time and resources to see cases through, as well as high-profile experience to add to your record. On top of this, you'll get to work at the heart of law enforcement response and deal with the biggest threats to national security.
