UKHO is on an exciting journey of digital transformation, presenting career defining opportunities for software engineers and developers. We are now seeking a Software Engineering Team Manager to lead the software engineering team, and support, and enable our development teams in delivering UKHO's digital vision.

 About the UKHO

UKHO is an executive agency, sponsored by the Ministry of Defence. We work with a wide range of data partners to chart the world's oceans in order to develop and serve world leading software and data solutions to commercial shipping companies, navies and maritime organisations. Our products ensure safe navigation and global trade efficiency and support other marine activities including economic development, environmental protection, resource exploration and utilisation, scientific research and security and defence.

The role

As a Software Development Team Manager, you will line manage a number of software and test engineers. You will also be responsible for ensuring that the capabilities of the software engineering team meet the needs of the wider organisation. A typical day may include:

Interviewing a number of people for software engineering roles

Carrying out one-to-one meetings with a number of engineers

Working with other development managers on skills planning for the year

Working on implementing a new process across delivery teams (such as safety assurance)

Attending a sprint review

Facilitating a bi-weekly meeting of Lead Engineers

One of the benefits of the role is seeing your contributions leading to better practices being used, teams and individuals growing, and enabling the UKHO to meet the needs of its customers now and in the future.

What we are looking for

This role is suited for someone with technical understanding of the challenges faced by software engineers, either through a previous technical role or previous experience as a software manager. In your application you will need to evidence experience of driving and implementing new ways of working, new tools, processes within a development environment/software engineering team, along with significant experience of managing, coaching and mentoring teams.

In return

UKHO is a great place in which to explore your career potential. While our projects are career-defining, the work/life balance that we can offer you is equally exceptional. From flexitime, flexible working, an award-winning office environment and a generous annual leave allowance of 34.5 days including public holidays, the opportunities open to you here are hard to beat.

We are working remotely at present but envisage a hybrid working model post pandemic whereby you will be able to balance your work location between working remotely and in the office.
