The opportunity

Leading by example you'll set the highest standards for application development in an ambitious team. You will take responsibility for development standards and will nurture the technical knowledge of your colleagues, growing their expertise in JavaScript and related technologies and tools. Seeing to it that new services are smoothly transitioned from project to live status, you will ensure the team fully understand the design and build principles, and that they are capable of enhancing the service as required.

This is an exciting opportunity to support bold improvement projects.

Who we are

At Ofsted, we are committed to raising standards and improving lives. As an independent, regulatory body, we maintain oversight of services that care for children and young people, and educational services for students of all ages. Through comprehensive assessments and regulatory visits, we ensure these services are meeting the highest standards, and we provide constructive support to those who have not met the grade, so that they too can deliver the level of care and education that we have come to expect in England. At a time of immense upheaval in the care and education sector due to the pandemic, we now have an exciting opportunity for a forward-thinking Principal Technology Developer to join our team and help us meet the needs of the future.

Your skills and experience

Experience of leading a team of developers in Javascript in a similarly complex and agile DevOps environment, including Kanban and sprints/scrums.

Solid hands on experience of JavaScript development and the associated technologies and tools. You will also have a good working knowledge of MS Azure DevOps, including build and release pipelines and CI/CD principles.

A practical knowledge of infrastructure as code (preferably Terraform), and source code management, such as Git.

A successful track record of analysing processes, applications and underlying technologies in order to identify where improvements need to be made.

Clear and effective communication skills, both written and verbal to a variety of audiences from both a technical and non-technical background.

Crucially, you will be an inspirational team leader with excellent communication skills. With the capacity to work in partnership with content designers, users and user researchers, you will see to it that design documentation, principles and expectations are being embraced by our in-house team, plus our suppliers and contractors.

Rewards

We're committed to your immediate and long-term future, so you will enjoy a supportive working environment with access to ongoing training and development opportunities. You will also benefit from a desirable salary, access to a competitive pension scheme and generous annual leave.
