Global Canopy is a data-driven think tank that targets the market forces destroying nature. We do this by improving transparency and accountability. We provide innovative open-access data, clear metrics, and actionable insights to leading companies, financial institutions, governments and campaigning organisations worldwide. Trase is jointly led by SEI and Global Canopy with many additional partners and close collaborators. The Trase team is made up of over 30 individuals, located in nine countries, brought together by enthusiasm, curiosity and drive.

Trase is a pioneering sustainability data and intelligence platform that reveals the connections between consumers, producers and investors, as well as the environmental and social impacts linked to global supply chains. The Trase approach draws on vast sets of production, trade, customs and financial data, for the first time laying bare the flows of globally-traded commodities - such as palm oil, soya, and beef at scale, as well as the flows of capital used to finance this trade.

Are you motivated and passionate about the power of data analysis and visualisations to help us understand some of the major environmental and sustainability challenges the world is facing in the 21st Century? We are looking for a self-starter with a strong background in processing and analysing environmental and/or social data. The Research Associate role is made up of four key responsibilities: data analysis and insights; research development; data processing; and team work.

Essential behavioural competencies:

  • Appetite for acquiring new skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, working collaboratively
  • Solutions-oriented and flexible in a fast-moving internal and external context, able to deliver and get new ideas off the ground

Essential skills and experience:

  • Master's degree or at least two years of commensurate experience in computer science, physics, mathematics, engineering, natural resource management, environmental science or related field. If not formally trained in these fields the candidate should demonstrate adequate experience in data analysis and programming.
  • Proficiency in programming in Python and ability to independently acquire new technical skills, including work in other programming languages quickly
  • Proficiency in handling, processing and analysing large amounts of data in a common statistical package or environment (e.g. R)
  • Previous experience in applied sustainability research, ideally with focus on quantitative analysis of trade flows, consumption accounting, or the environmental and social impacts of land-use change
  • Experience and strong interest in data stories and insights and using data to support decision-making
