Lead cutting-edge projects that will enhance the safety of the UK

At the Home Office, we have a very clear mission - to protect our borders, and to keep the UK safe.

Handling everything from immigration and passports to drug and crime policies, we have adopted an agile approach, working both proactively and reactively. This creates a workplace that is like no other. With an annual budget of £13.6billion, we offer unparalleled opportunities for our talented workforce. This is particularly true of our talented Digital Data and Technology (DDaT) team who are at the heart of all that we do. With a bigger cloud infrastructure than any organisation in Europe, plus world leading machine learning capabilities, this team designs, builds and operates services that enable the wider team to fulfil their duties, offering a progressive environment in which to tackle the UK's most pressing challenges.

We are now seeking a number of Senior Principal Technical Leads to deliver large programmes of work within the Chief Technology Office. This team is responsible for architecture, engineering and technology within the Home Office, plus overall governance. The challenges that you could be involved in include:

Scaling the use of public cloud services across many services.

Applying machine learning techniques in an operational context.

Building Cross-organising DevOps platforms for hundreds of teams.

Delivering Event driven microservice architectures for millions of users.

These roles have previously been delivered by outside suppliers, so this is an exciting opportunity to help us establish a successful future. Working with projects at different levels of maturity, you will find a varied challenge that could extend from designing and building solutions to help people prove their identity, to leading projects to refine the critical IT systems used by our counter terrorism colleagues. Across the board we will look to you to lead multiple delivery teams, anticipating issues before they become a problem, and coming up with innovative solutions to keep projects on track. We embrace the most innovative ways of working, so you will also identify integrated working opportunities, influencing how technical architecture is delivered across the organisation.

To excel in this unique team, we will expect you to be passionate about technical architecture, and you will be well-versed in systems, software and programming development. With the capacity to influence the outputs of Technical Directors, you will be a trusted consultant. With confident skills in solution, enterprise and business architecture, you will have a background of delivering at scale in one of these key areas: cloud architectures, microservices, machine learning in operations, real time data, DevOps at large scale. Delivering complex solutions that are robust - on time and within budget - you will be an inspirational leader who can inspire a culture of technical excellence.  As such, you will have exceptional communication skills, and your background in large technical organisations or businesses that are digitally aligned will ensure your visionary approaches are respected by colleagues. You should have a reputation for leading innovative thinking - such as speaking at conferences or in writing .

With flexible working including the option to adopt a hybrid home/office approach, this is an exciting chance to join a forward-thinking organisation. We will support your long-term goals with access to the most interesting development opportunities, and you will receive a competitive benefits package that includes access to the civil service pension scheme. So if you would like to play your part in securing the safety of the nation, we would be delighted to receive your application.
