BMJ Tech is seeking a Front End Developer who wants to join a growing team. You will be up to date with new technologies, driven to improve the user experience and performance of online products and interested in the performance of transactional websites and app products. You will also be an expert in your chosen discipline as well as being willing and able to learn new technologies and use that knowledge at work.
BMJ has several online products used by healthcare professionals worldwide. This position will be involved in many systems concentrating on our BMJ porfolio
The role requires a Front End Developer able to quickly deliver new features and improve the look and feel, performance, accessibility, usability of our product plus work closely with colleagues in CoLab and UX.
We are looking for someone who can create BMJ design assets that adhere to BMJ's brand guidelines.
Responsabilties
Ensure that BMJ's digital products pass accessibility standards.
Write HTML and CSS for the above mentioned designs. Own conceptual development, direction and delivery of visual design projects.
Provide technical expertise and experience to the rest of the team.
Proactively propose improvements to design/development processes, technologies and tools.
Follow a user-centred approach to design and code considering industry best practices while adhering to WCAG 2.10 AA accessibility standards
Create new WordPress promotional site or dedicated pages from existing templates.
Create designs, both print and digital, for web pages, journal homepage widgets, logos, banners, journal covers, icons, powerpoint slides, newsletters, posters, etc.
Update content on WordPress and HighWire web pages
Update and maintain the BMJ logo bank
Create banners in the WisePops environment.
Drive design thought leadership
Working as part of the BMJ Technology team, design and build cross-platform interactive graphics, interfaces and new story formats across the BMJ portfolio.
Collaborate with marketeers, UXers product managers to incorporate user feedback.
Qualifications
A high standard of written and spoken English is required.
Strong communication skills are required.
Educational and work experience equivalent to a science/computing degree are required.
5+ years experience in a similar job required prior to taking up this position with strong visual design foundation
Designing and Developing commercial customers facing online products.
STM (scientific, technical, medical) publishing is desirable.
Formal development methods are required. These include: design frameworks, testing frameworks, build management, source control management, change control management, and fault resolution management.
Wordpress - HTML, CSS/SCSS, PHP, Dashboard
Responsive web design
Handling page performance and accessibility issues including typography
Adobe Creative Suite of software: Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign
Image optimisation
