Assignment Brief

We're looking for three contractors to support our existing Linux team whilst we transform and standardise our offering. This will be a contract for up to 4 months with a mixture of the following skills/ experience required:

Experience

*Linux system administration

oPrimarily RHEL-based (inc. Centos)

oSome debian-based

*Solaris

*MySQL/MariaDB

*Experience troubleshooting and diagnosing complex end-user problems with software and GUI desktop environments

*Experience supporting the use of Linux and common end-user software, e.g. python, anaconda, singularity, latex, etc

*Creating and reviewing documentation

*Supporting Virtual environments

*Remote end-user support, including remote access to and use of Linux systems from other platforms (e.g. Windows, Mac)

*Support of users and Linux systems in technically diverse (preferably academic RH/Centos) environment

*Deployment of software / operating systems using enterprise level management tools like puppet (version 3-5)/satellite

Skills

*Basic sysadmin

*SSSD

*Active directory (connectivity from Linux and use for authentication/authorisataion and mapping)

*Puppet

*Web servers

*Networking

*Coding/scripting: at least bash and something else (python, perl, etc)

*Linux on the desktop and server

*Software packaging - Env Modules, RPM, compiling from source

This work will start via remote working, until the University begins to move staff back onto campus, the contractors will be expected to supply their own equipment, capable of connecting to university systems via virtual desktop and ssh services.

Background

The University is part way through several major programmes of work, pertinent to this engagement are:

*Our Data Centre Strategy (DCS) project is moving from a mixed estate of ~1000 virtual and physical SPARC and x86 servers in 36 locations to managed public and private cloud services supporting Windows and Redhat Linux.

*Our Linux team are dramatically simplifying the landscape we work in- coming from six different configuration managements to one whilst increasing security patching/compliance and deploying enhanced monitoring across our estate.

Engagement Length & Financial information

Our requirement for this contract is for a maximum 4-month engagement to finish by 31 July 2021

This is a contractor role, inside IR35- we will review at market rates, but overall cost will be a factor in our decision.
