SQL Server Developer Role Definition

About the role

The role will involve:

*Onboarding an existing ASP.NET 2.0 Visual Basic application from an external supplier. The SQLServer developer will be responsible for managing the database components of the application. The application is written in VB.net, runs on an IIS server and connects to a SQLServer database. This onboarding will involve:

oDoing Knowledge Transfer with the current supplier to ensure that all relevant information is captured and retained, specifically around the database, the database schema, any database routines that are run and ensuring that the database is appropriately configured.

oWorking with the rest of the team documenting the system thoroughly. This documentation will include the application itself as well as appropriate support processes.

*Once the application is onboarded you will work with the other developers, Principle Engineer, DevOps, business analysts and the business unit to refine the business requirements and further develop the application. You will be involved in designing, running and improving software that meets user needs.

*Assisting the testers through the test life cycle into production. Once the system is in production, proving Early Life Support until the system is accepted into life. At this point the developer will be involved in Level 3 Support as well as further development of the application.

*Working within the Azure cloud.

The work will be done as part of an Agile team and other team members will include Scrum Master, Business Analysts, Testers, Windows Dev Ops & Principle engineers.

You will work to our technical standards writing clean, secure code following a test-driven approach, ensuring the code is open as far as possible and can be re-used.

Main responsibilities

Your main day to day responsibilities will be:

*managing all MS SQLServer application database development.

*delivering secure, reliable and scalable software in your team; undertaking a breadth of development tasks

*designing new software using appropriate tools and in line with standards, proving designs through prototyping

*reporting on system performance and supporting test activities; keeping documentation up to date

*supporting services you have delivered through regular maintenance activities, balancing your work with your leadership

*working with other engineers to deliver new capability, for instance improved CI/CD pipelines or test approaches

*working and assessing to appropriate standards: for instance, accessibility, the GDS service standard and our own community practices

*improving our skills and approaches as well as keeping up to speed with the technology landscape

Skills and experience

Essential Skills

You'll have a demonstrable experience in:

*significant SQL development in various versions of MS SQLServer.

*Working with ASP.NET developers and an understanding of how data would be transferred between the various components in an ASP.NET system.

*Ability to work with existing code and to maintain it, manage it and update it to work in later versions of SQLServer.

*Experience of linking SQLServer to Outlook to generate mail.

*Experience of Crystal Reports would be an advantage.
