Assistant Software Engineering Domain Lead

Would you like to play a pivotal role supporting engineering projects across Royal Navy submarine programmes? We currently have a vacancy for an Assistant Software Engineering Domain Lead at one of our sites in Weymouth, Filton, Portsmouth (Broad Oak) or Barrow.

As the Assistant Software Engineering Domain Lead, you will be working within the software engineering discipline as part of the main engineering function. You will assist the Software Engineering Domain Lead in developing and maintaining software capability within the engineering function covering People, Process, Toolsets, Technology, Information and Facilities. This will involve engaging with the program teams to understand their requirements to enable delivery. Take responsibility for elements of the overall software domain capability plan, and support onward reporting to Submarines, Maritime and Corporate functional reviews, to ensure the engineering capability within the software engineering discipline is fit for purpose.

This role will provide you with the opportunity to make a significant impact on the development of a software engineering capability for BAE Systems Submarines. You will help to determine the direction of this discipline for the whole business unit, across all programmes current and future. It will provide you with the opportunity to develop your skills in capability management and will provide a good steppingstone into engineering leadership roles in the future. You will also have a good amount of interaction with senior stakeholders, as well as the chance to influence change.

Your main responsibilities as an Assistant Software Engineering Domain Lead will involve:

Acting as a point of contact on resourcing and recruitment matters for software engineering.

Understanding the resource demands of multiple programmes and projects to ensure a timely supply of engineers.

Supporting the Software Engineering Domain Lead in highlighting prioritisation decisions required for SQEP (Suitably Qualified and Experienced Person) resources in software Engineering covering software development and acquisition to meet the programmes needs and the career development of individuals.

Ensuring the continued technical and professional development of the software engineering community to achieve and sustain the necessary SQEP and thus to ensure quality of engineering activities.

Attendance and participation at meetings and workshops to develop improve and sustain processes within Software Engineering, deployed to all programmes. Supporting delivery of governance (compliance) and ensuring quality control of the application of software engineering processes across the Programmes.

Being part of the development and maintenance of the domain plan for specialist toolsets across the Software Engineering discipline, which in turn is integrated with the overall Engineering Toolsets strategy and plan in order to ensure engineering tools are fit for purpose and are as efficient as they can be.

Supporting the Software Engineering Domain Lead in establishing a technology plan for Software Engineering, which when integrated with the Domain Group technology plan, provides governance and optimises the development of new technology working closely with the Technology Capability team to ensure value and alignment to business direction.

Your skills and qualifications as an Engineering Manager:

Essential:

  • Experience of the full end-to-end lifecycle of software products, for acquisition or development and the ability to apply good software management practices to yours and others work
  • Experience of working to relevant engineering standards (eg ISO Standards, Mil-Standards), including safety and environmental regulations
  • Related Engineering degree (or equivalent qualification or experience)

Desirable:

  • Member of appropriate professional institution; Chartered Engineer or working towards Chartership
  • Experience of being responsible for the management, delivery and sign off of software products and systems
  • Knowledge of Safety and/or Security in relation to software intensive systems
  • Experience working in an Agile environment
