The Opportunity: We are recruiting a Front End Developer for the Pathogen Informatics team, a software development and support team in the Parasites and Microbes department at the Wellcome Sanger Institute. About Us/the Role: The Pathogen Informatics team embrace agile methods and promote open source software development. In close collaboration with the scientists on site, we develop workflows and platforms to productionise large-scale surveillance activities for infectious diseases, such as malaria, pneumonia and Covid-19. We also support the scientists by developing and deploying software and services that advance their research, and provide direct informatics advice. As a dynamic team we share all elements of our work, so you would be involved in a variety of different projects, with a focus on developing web services that present genomic data to scientific and non-scientific end users. About You: We are looking for a talented and enthusiastic problem solver with a degree in a computer science discipline. You will have experience in creating web applications using modern JavaScript technologies and are interested in also supporting the back-end infrastructure. You are passionate about writing clean and robust code, enjoy finding new solutions to technical challenges, and are keen to share and discuss your approaches with the team. You have an interest in teaching others and improve continuously. Most importantly, you are motivated to support the science and make a difference in the fight against infectious diseases to improve global health. Essential Skills Technical skills: MSc in a Computer Science discipline or equivalent working experience Experience in developing web applications in modern JavaScript frameworks Experience in building and testing RESTful Web Services and APIs in Python Working knowledge of UNIX/Linux Competencies and behaviours: Ability to prioritise, manage workload, and deliver agreed activities consistently Ability to work collaboratively with a range of stakeholders at all levels Ideal Skills Experience of working with relational database systems Experience of container deployment and orchestration technologies such as Docker, Singularity, or Kubernetes Working experience in bioinformatics or scientific data analysis Experience of providing training on specific technologies. Other information Whilst the developments around COVID-19 continue to evolve, the Wellcome Genome Campus is closed for all but essential functions and facilities. People remain at the centre of everything that we do and the majority of our staff are now working remotely to ensure continuity of operations, making use of remote communication and collaboration tools. Interviews will be taking place virtually and the successful candidate should expect to be fully supported through remote on-boarding and working from home until the Campus re-opens to all staff. This approach may vary for individuals located overseas and/or where a visa is required and starting will be based on a number of factors, we will be able to provide specialist advice to those affected candidates.
