Nesta is looking for several Data Scientists to help us create impact and positive social change through cutting edge and innovative Data Science. Nesta's New Strategy
Nesta's new strategy sets an exciting and aspiring goal: over the next decade we will design, test and scale innovations that improve millions of lives. To do this, Nesta will pursue three innovation ‘Missions': Better Beginning (ensuring the circumstances of your birth do not dictate the trajectory of your life) Healthy Life (increasing the number of years lived in good health) Sustainable Future (accelerating the transition to a net-zero economy that works better for people and the planet) We are growing our Data Science capability, building on our highly successful and pioneering work in Innovation Mapping, Open Jobs Data and the Creative Economy so that we can meet the needs of our aspiring Missions. We have several roles available both within our core Data Analytics Practice as well as embedded within our multidisciplinary Mission teams. About these exciting opportunities
These Principal Data Scientist roles will be embedded within our Healthy Life and Sustainable Future Mission Teams and will be at the forefront of designing, scoping and delivering data science projects that deliver impact in these areas. This will include working within multidisciplinary teams alongside designers, behavioural scientists and experimentation professionals offering a fantastic opportunity to apply Data Science within wider projects and to understand how these disciplines can effectively come together to deliver high impact work. A core part of these roles will be a relentless focus on impact and the pragmatism to support the best intervention to achieve that impact always in a way that is consistent with the robust ethical/data justice frameworks that we are currently developing. We are also looking to recruit several roles at various levels from Junior through to Principal Data Scientists, and who will be based within our core Data Analytics Practice. As well as bringing their Data Science skills to bear on Mission projects you will have the opportunity to get involved in, and steer, projects in other areas, initially building on the practice's previous strengths in Innovation Policy, Open Jobs and the Creative Economy. Example projects could include mapping the location of companies specialising in Artificial Intelligence based on an analysis of their website text data, identifying key technology trends from text analysis of academic research publications or online job advertisements. These projects will support the development of tools and infrastructure which we can then apply to our Missions, contributing to the data and code infrastructure for social good-oriented data science. We welcome applications from people with strengths in any area within the Data Science stack and are particularly looking to grow our natural language processing, supervised machine learning, network science, causal inference, computational social science and agent-based modeling capabilities. We would also highly value applicants with domain or subject matter knowledge relating to our Missions (Better Beginning, Healthy Life or Sustainable Future), and applicants with data engineering / visualisation / product development skills that may facilitate collaboration with other disciplines within the practice. Nesta's Data Analytics Practice
The Data Analytics Practice is composed of Data Scientists, Data Engineers, Data Visualisers, Product Developers, User Researchers, Project Managers and Impact & Evaluation Specialists. Our projects and workflow span all of these disciplines and you will have the opportunity to work with and learn from team members as we deliver projects together. Over time, should you wish to explore opportunities to work in any of the adjacent disciplines to Data Science this can be facilitated within the practice which opens up even more opportunities to grow and develop. Nesta provides ample opportunities to grow and learn new skills both through our cutting edge work and through training so above all else we are looking for people with a willingness to learn, adapt and apply themselves to new opportunities. Our tools: In general we are a Python-centric team but some of us also work with R. Some of our favourite packages (in no particular order) include pandas, scikit-learn, Tensorflow/Keras, statsmodels, SpaCy, Gensim, geopandas, scrapy, networkX and Altair. We follow the git workflow using Jupyter notebooks to share analyses, and store our data via SQL, ElasticSearch or GraphQL in AWS. We increasingly use metaflow to scale up our work. Colleagues in the product development and visualisation use tools such as D3 and Svelte. This is a Fixed term contract for 2 years. Please note this application does not have a specific closing date. At Nesta, we believe that a diverse workforce leads to an organisation that is more innovative, more creative and gets better results. We want our workforce to represent the diversity of the people and communities we serve. We also want our workplace to be one where different experiences, expertise and perspectives are valued, and where everyone is encouraged to grow and develop. This means that when we are recruiting, we actively seek to reach a diverse pool of candidates. It also means that we are happy to consider any reasonable adjustments that potential employees may need to in order to be successful. We recognise the importance of a good balance between work and home life, so we do everything we can to accommodate flexible working, including working from home, compressed or part-time hours, job shares and other arrangements. Please just let us know in your application or at any stage throughout the process (and beyond) if these are options you'd like to explore.
